PreWar binoculars
information
This mod adds some much needed binoculars to the game. No more wondering if this distant NPC is friendly!
They can be upgraded to allow variable zoom or night vision as well as re-tuning capabilities. You can turn the night vision on and off via the ignition while the batteries are in. Batteries can be purchased at the ammo supplier or crafted when using AWKCR. You only need one battery and they don't run out (as of now).
I'm trying to keep the upgrades balanced so NV and Scouting require Gun Nut and Science 1.
where to find it
Binoculars can be found as semi-rare loot in the Commonwealth, or you can usually find one at a gun dealer under the weapons tab. Mayor McDonough also has a pair in his office so he can keep an eye on the city.
Batteries can also be found as loot, with general stores often selling a pair under the ammo tab as well.
Alternatively, if you are using an AWKCR, you can craft binoculars at the Weaponsmith workbench under the Electronics category, and you can craft batteries at the Ammo workbench under the Electronics category.
Known issues
Sometimes, after switching NV, the recon attachment will not work properly. To fix this you usually just need to equip and re-equip the binoculars, but if that still doesn't fix it then throwing them to the ground and picking them back up usually works. The only situation I've noticed where I needed to discard it was with McDonough's binoculars.
The animation uses Alien Blaster animation for the time being, so holding binoculars looks a bit strange.
Install & use Install: follow the bundled instructions
- Unzip the archive from playbuff and read the bundled readme / instructions first.
- There is no universal mod manager for this game: some mods replace game files directly, some go into a game-specific Mods folder, and some need a game-specific community loader or tool first — follow the bundled readme.
- Place the files exactly as the readme says; mods with listed dependencies need those installed too.
- Launch the game to confirm it loaded; some games require enabling mods in settings or an in-game mod menu.
Install locations vary a lot between games and mods — the bundled readme is the most reliable guide.
