Heart of Darkness is a character-focused quest series that follows the lives of several original characters as they seek ways to survive in the wasteland and each other. While they each have their own lives, hopes, and fears; their fate, for better or worse, ultimately depends on what the player does or doesn't do. But in this world with more gray than black and white, what is right and what is wrong can only be surrendered to the instinct of survival.
feature:
1 DLC sized campaign mod with approximately 15 hours of gameplay.
Full voice cast of 2 unique characters.
3 Fully voiced player character dialogue.
4 Several new locations to explore and new lore focused on Reavers and the process of becoming one.
5 Incorporates multiple Fo4 side quests and locations. These often add extra options or extra encounters.
6 A new story with complex characters and multiple outcomes, some good, some bad, maybe some surprising.
Companions:
Companions in this mod have more autonomy than traditional Fo4 companions. So while players can sometimes
Choose who they work with, but they can't hire or fire them at will.
That being said, when players follow their companions, they sometimes have the option to request a short break so they can explore a building or something else. This option will only appear if it makes sense within the context of the larger task. For example, you can't ask to go sightseeing when you're going to rescue someone...
In addition, when the player follows a companion, the companion will stop guiding and instead follow the player to assist in the battle.
If your companion stops leading because an enemy spots you, you can still ask your companion to keep going. they usually listen
Yours, unless they themselves are harmed.
There is no romance in this mod, but you can develop friendships with your companions, which will affect the final game of the mod.
set up:
This mod is designed to be played with new or very early characters. New games will be given priority.
If you do use an existing save, the mod will do an initial check to see if it's compatible with your world state. This check doesn't mean 100% that something won't go wrong, but it will rule out things that are definitely not working properly. A window will then pop up on your PipBoy telling you what went wrong.
Most of the hard requirements for story status have been removed and are now warnings. For example, if you've already completed one of the shelters, the mod will be playable, but some of the dialogue may seem out of context or reference battles that won't happen because you've killed everyone before.
Assuming the mod is compatible with your save or you start a new character, some areas may be blocked until you reach the relevant quest in the mod. You will receive a "Come back later" message. These are safe changes and if you uninstall the mod, the blockers will also be removed.
compatibility:
This mod makes some changes to Federation Wasteland, so other mods that make changes to the following locations may not be compatible. If you're not sure if one of your mods is affected, you may still be able to use it as long as you save more often. Then, if something goes wrong, you can try disabling the mod and loading your previous save.

Install & use Install: follow the bundled instructions
- Unzip the archive from playbuff and read the bundled readme / instructions first.
- There is no universal mod manager for this game: some mods replace game files directly, some go into a game-specific Mods folder, and some need a game-specific community loader or tool first — follow the bundled readme.
- Place the files exactly as the readme says; mods with listed dependencies need those installed too.
- Launch the game to confirm it loaded; some games require enabling mods in settings or an in-game mod menu.
Install locations vary a lot between games and mods — the bundled readme is the most reliable guide.
