Hangmans Alley optimization
This mod expands the build area, improves performance, and cleans up the Hangman's Alley player located in the Diamond City neighborhood of downtown Boston. It does this by eliminating all the clutter, debris, and frills that the default game presents in a greatly expanded build area of 4 cells centered around the workbench. For the non-technically minded, this can be thought of as Hangman's Alley, the large city block in the middle that runs from the Charles River to the streets where Diamond City is safe from fighting super mutants, and when you first get to that location it borders the north and south with the main roads to the east and west serving as those borders. See the screenshots for better information on settlement's new boundaries and overhead and a ground plane view.
Typically, removing objects and debris can have a negative impact on performance and FPS, as it disables Bethesda's Previsualization and Precombination systems specifically designed to improve performance. This mod solves the problem as all objects are removed and then the necessary previs/precombine files are regenerated in order to restore performance to its previous state. These regenerated files should theoretically perform better than the default in this area of the game, given that a lot of objects that I felt were unnecessary were removed for cleaning and performance reasons, but naturally YMMV at this point.
For an in-depth look at these systems and how they impact your game, see here: Fallout 4 Optimization and Performance Systems Explained
feature
Significantly expanded the floor area of the Hangman's Alley settlement in terms of width and height (see screenshot)
Expanded boundaries make it possible to place water purifiers as the Charles River boundary is now accessible
Remove virtually all debris and debris previously located in and around the settlement
There will be no loss of performance by removing debris, in fact performance should be the same as or better than the default game
Attack markers have been moved outside new settlement boundaries to greatly reduce "insider" attacks on all workshop attacks
notes
In order for the cleaning portion of this module to work, some previously locked or closed entry points placed by the attacker need to be removed. This involves gates and temporary barriers on the far east and west sides of the old limit. The appearance of these particular attractions may look a little strange before you start building, especially on the west side near Street 81, but this mod is for those who know the pitfalls and annoyances of the default Hangman's Alley and want to build without them. Perhaps those walls were knocked down in the attack and have not been rebuilt - the occupants were the attackers after all, and construction was not their strong suit.
Space in this settlement in the "main part" is still at a premium as all the large buildings that formed the former boundaries still exist. This is done for both practical and gaming reasons. Realistically, removing them all would make this mod a lot more complex and complicated than it already is, another reason is that I still want the location to have a cramped, cramped feel and have the main building keep that feel. My advice would be to build or build - now that all the roofs have been cleared, the build limit when it comes to height and the settler sandbox is pretty high - now at least 10 or more higher than the existing roofs. There is plenty of room outside the original alley for you to place your structure.
Green settlement building boundaries are close to but not exactly correct to the actual building limits of settlement. Creating a perfectly matching figure wasn't something I thought was needed so I borrowed an existing one that mostly fit - or more accurately - could be made to suit the build constraints. Use the screenshots as a guide to the new limits, but don't expect them to match exactly.

Install & use Install: follow the bundled instructions
- Unzip the archive from playbuff and read the bundled readme / instructions first.
- There is no universal mod manager for this game: some mods replace game files directly, some go into a game-specific Mods folder, and some need a game-specific community loader or tool first — follow the bundled readme.
- Place the files exactly as the readme says; mods with listed dependencies need those installed too.
- Launch the game to confirm it loaded; some games require enabling mods in settings or an in-game mod menu.
Install locations vary a lot between games and mods — the bundled readme is the most reliable guide.
