Special thanks to D1v1ne122 for generously granting permission to use his work as the basis for this project.
Hello everyone. I've long wanted to make atmospheric and immersive mods, especially ones that focus on meaningful interaction with the game world.
Later, I discovered "Fallout 2287 - Wasteland Gas Mask" by D1v1ne122. I love the core concept, but was always drawn to the sheer scope of the mod and the multiple areas it affects simultaneously. I also wanted to recreate the visible breathing effect from Fallout 2287: Nuclear Winter to bring an extra layer of chilly atmosphere and immersion to GasMask Makeover.
Eventually, I came up with the idea of making a smaller, simpler, more responsive device. Rather than building directly on the old design, I wanted to strip some things back, rethink some of the original scheme, and bring in my own ideas and implementations.
I'm also aware that the vanilla mod has some limitations and rough edges, so I try to make the overall experience simpler and smoother.
Although "Fallout 2287 - Wasteland Gas Mask" is essentially a large-scale gameplay overhaul, including filter management, survival mechanics, etc., "Gas Mask Overhaul" takes a completely different approach. It's primarily a quality-of-life and immersive enhancement to the gas masks already in the base game, while also adding a mask from the excellent Metro Gas Mask mod.
In the next section, I'll go over what's included in Gasmask Overhaul and how it differs from Fallout 2287's original concept.
In short, you can think of it as a modernized version of Fallout 2287. It retains the ideas that made the original mod so appealing, but reshapes it to be lighter, more focused, and designed around a different type of experience.
How is it different from "Fallout 2287"?
Gas Mask Makeover reinvents the original concept in a more modern, focused way. Instead of building a huge survival framework, it focuses on the parts that make the gas mask responsive and physical: equip/unload animations, dynamic breathing sounds/visual effects, GlassFX, rain on goggles, manual wipes, blood effects, dedicated shortcuts, audio sliders. The heavier systems in Fallout 2287, such as filter degradation, Fallout gameplay, and broader world changes, are intentionally omitted in favor of a simpler implementation, fewer dependencies, simpler configuration, and a lighter overall experience. Simply put, GasMask Makeover is a modern reinterpretation of the original concept, focusing on immersion and interactivity.
feature:
Supports gas mask equipping and removal animations. Original animation footage from Fallout 2287 - Wasteland Gas Masks has been repurposed and integrated into Gas Mask Revamp for supported original masks. The PPM-88 also comes with first-person and third-person equip/unload animations specifically tuned to suit its model and implementation.
Dynamic breathing sounds based on movement and low health. Breathing automatically switches between normal, sprinting, and injured states, and male and female voice combinations are separated. When the player is seriously injured, breathing with low health is prioritized, helping the mask to be more responsive to the player's condition. Gas Mask Makeover also adds two dedicated volume sliders to the game's audio setti …
Install & use Install: follow the bundled instructions
- Unzip the archive from playbuff and read the bundled readme / instructions first.
- There is no universal mod manager for this game: some mods replace game files directly, some go into a game-specific Mods folder, and some need a game-specific community loader or tool first — follow the bundled readme.
- Place the files exactly as the readme says; mods with listed dependencies need those installed too.
- Launch the game to confirm it loaded; some games require enabling mods in settings or an in-game mod menu.
Install locations vary a lot between games and mods — the bundled readme is the most reliable guide.
