Overview

Fallout 4's UI is generally nice to look at. Hard lines and transparent windows with clean, readable text and bold drop shadow for emphasis.

Unfortunately, these design concepts were thrown out the window with Pip-Boy. It has to settle for a claustrophobic frame, a thick curved glass screen that distorts everything you put on it, a crappy RetroArch CRT shader, and maybe 40% of your total screen space. Maybe it's more immersive, but it's certainly not more useful, which I think is a more important metric for something as important as a menu that acts as a stat list, inventory management, quest log, and map.

Baka Fullscreen Pip-Boy was made to solve this problem. It separates the Pip-Boy menu from the Pip-Boy screen and displays it like most other menus in the game.

feature

Completely removes the Pip-Boy menu from the Pip-Boy screen.

This includes the 5 main tabs, and also includes a holotape that plays on the Pip-Boy.

Toggles Pip-Boy visual effects and optionally retains coloring without effects, including unique colors in power armor.

Pip-Boy animations should still work as expected, such as the vault door unlock sequence that displays a message on screen.

(The first time a Pip-Boy is equipped with a startup sequence, the animation plays normally, but then the menu appears on the screen. Simply close and open the Pip-Boy once to switch to the full-screen menu.

Black background fills the screen if you like the blurred background color is not very clear.

Switch back to the normal Pip-Boy experience at any time.

This mod makes very drastic changes to the game, and while I think I've covered all the cases, there may be a strange issue that arises. MCM switching should make fixing anything that might otherwise be a breeze a breeze.

Install

Install using the mod manager, it only requires F4SE and the address library.

compatibility

It should be compatible with almost everything.

Yes, this includes FallUI.

I didn't touch any of the actual Pip-Boy interface files, just the low-level code in the executable. As far as I know, there aren't many mods, if any, that do the same thing. The only thing to note is that if you want to use FallUI to disable Pip-Boy, you should use Baka Fullscreen Pip-Boy's option to disable the Pip-Boy effect. Fallout 4.ini settings work, but look worse.

Install & use Install: follow the bundled instructions

  1. Unzip the archive from playbuff and read the bundled readme / instructions first.
  2. There is no universal mod manager for this game: some mods replace game files directly, some go into a game-specific Mods folder, and some need a game-specific community loader or tool first — follow the bundled readme.
  3. Place the files exactly as the readme says; mods with listed dependencies need those installed too.
  4. Launch the game to confirm it loaded; some games require enabling mods in settings or an in-game mod menu.

Install locations vary a lot between games and mods — the bundled readme is the most reliable guide.
