Female Super Mutant Redux Female Super Mutant

HarmonicaBlues created replacement files that convert all mutants to female versions with the mod Female Super Mutants. The permissions are set to "I don't care, do what you want with it!" So I've taken the art and sound files and created new records for them suitable for Super Mutant Redux. The current setup makes about 20% of super mutants "female".

Files from Female Super Mutants include reworking all super mutant vanilla armor to fit the new body. Super Mutant Redux made a lot of changes and options to the vanilla armor, so I had to make some compromises. Generally speaking, SMRs have light, medium and heavy versions of armor, with vanilla looking the most like heavy armor. When viewed on a female, all 3 types of torso and legs look the same. The arms and helmet seem to fit mainly a female body, so the male version is used. There is at least one leg model that does not have a vanilla equivalent, so use the male version and crop the result. There is also a female version of Vanilla Armor Style 3 that SMR calls the Overlord's Breastplate, but it still doesn't fit. Changing armor is not in my current skill set, so you get what HarmonicaBlues offers.

The female super mutant also has its own voice file, also provided by HarmonicaBlues. This is the majority of the file size. Art files are just small .nif files.

Internal technical information:

I went through multiple iterations trying to get it to work. I left some unused records in the esp if needed in the future. The SMR itself has hundreds of unused records.

The last major technique used was to add females to the LCharMutantVoices Leveled NPC list. SMR changes this list from a size of 3 to a size of 153 entries. In order for women to show up at 20% rate, I need to add 30 more records. I've read that long horizontal lists can cause problems so what I did was break the list down into categories based on facial texture.

Melee mutants present another problem. In order for Nightkin to spawn with other melees, the LCharMutantVoices record cannot be used as a Traits template for base spawning NPCs. One side effect is that the face paint doesn't change the body type (skinny, fat, muscular) of the melee character. To make the female melee, I changed the EncSuperMutant0XMelee record to produce a specific facial texture. I tried using LCharMutantVoices as a template for Traits, but found that level lists don't work in template order. Prior to level 16, all melee super mutants who are not Nightkin will be female. As you get higher in levels, you'll see more males with different facial textures, but they won't have a wide variety of super mutants.

Fixes for Super Mutant Redux:

I did my job using Super Mutant Redux version 2.5. With all the failed iterations I went through, I did a lot of super mutant spawn testing. I also checked a lot of SMR records through FO4Edit. I found some bugs along the way.

Artwork for topcoat type 7 exists, but the texture set records topcoat 6. Topcoat 7 is a cool effect but not practical. I chose to eliminate topcoat 7 from the LCharMutantVoices list.

Topcoat 5 texture set record pointed to Topcoat 4. I have corrected this.

Topcoat 3's NPC records all use Topcoat 7 texture set (pointing to 6, causing Topcoat 6 to use 3x as much as the other topcoats). I've fixed the NPC topcoat 3 record, using the topcoat 3 texture.

Many NPC records set to use vanilla facial textures use high-resolution "MadMax" body textures. The result is that if you replace the vanilla Super Mutant texture with something like Supermutant Re-texture, you'll get a weird mismatch between the face and body. This was important to me so I could have the female super mutant use a better texture than vanilla without having to make one myself (which wouldn't look good). I don't know if I've fixed all cases of this mismatch, but I've fixed many NPC records.

Install & use Install: follow the bundled instructions

  1. Unzip the archive from playbuff and read the bundled readme / instructions first.
  2. There is no universal mod manager for this game: some mods replace game files directly, some go into a game-specific Mods folder, and some need a game-specific community loader or tool first — follow the bundled readme.
  3. Place the files exactly as the readme says; mods with listed dependencies need those installed too.
  4. Launch the game to confirm it loaded; some games require enabling mods in settings or an in-game mod menu.

Install locations vary a lot between games and mods — the bundled readme is the most reliable guide.
