I didn't notice this until recently, but the default map you see when bringing up Pip-Boy isn't aligned correctly. This is especially noticeable when standing in the middle of a vertical or horizontal road while bringing up the map on the Pip-Boy, which will often tell you that you're not standing on a road at all.
There are several mods partially designed to solve this problem, and I've tried them all. None of them are as precise as this one, and they all change more than is strictly necessary (contrast/brightness/size/add stuff).
This mod only offers one texture: Pip-Boy's Commonwealth map. The textures themselves are derived from Bethesda's default textures, but adjusted to exactly match your actual location. Bethesda's default unmodified map is not only misaligned, but also slightly warped here and there, so it can't be completely perfect without redrawing the entire map from scratch. However, I came as close as I could. This is done by adjusting its position along the x and y axes and stretching it a bit if necessary.
I manually compared the map to hundreds of locations in the game world, from northeast to southwest, northwest to southeast, to make sure it was just right.
Install:
The mod should be enabled first, as described in the following link:
Use your usual mod manager, or manually drag and drop the contents of the downloaded archive into your Fallout 4 folder. Don't overwrite the entire folder, but merge when asked. The final result should look like this: ...\Fallout 4\Data\Textures\Interface\Pip-Boy\WorldMap_d.dds
uninstall:
Use your favorite mod manager, or manually delete the file and the empty folder containing it (only if there is nothing else in it). It's completely safe to add or remove at any time.
compatibility:
Very nice and loose, but not sure. Should work on most versions of the game, but has not been tested with next-gen updates. May overwrite other mods that change the texture of the Pip-Boy Commonwealth map, but is easily removed if a conflict occurs.
What this module does:
It adjusts the Pip-Boy Commonwealth map texture to fix its poor alignment so that the map now correctly displays your actual location.
What this mod doesn’t do:
It does not add any extra content to the map, such as map legends, names, logos, numbers, identifiers, etc. Don't touch, add or delete any map markers. It also doesn't change the map's brightness, contrast, size, or sharpness. This was just Pip-Boy's default federation map, but it's been fixed.
Special thanks to:
- Bethesda, of course. Everyone has a love-hate relationship with Bethesda.
- convert.com, allows me to easily convert the *.dds texture file format online.
- LunaPic and the online PNG tool give me an easy way to edit images online without having to refresh my Photoshop license.
Install & use Install: follow the bundled instructions
- Unzip the archive from playbuff and read the bundled readme / instructions first.
- There is no universal mod manager for this game: some mods replace game files directly, some go into a game-specific Mods folder, and some need a game-specific community loader or tool first — follow the bundled readme.
- Place the files exactly as the readme says; mods with listed dependencies need those installed too.
- Launch the game to confirm it loaded; some games require enabling mods in settings or an in-game mod menu.
Install locations vary a lot between games and mods — the bundled readme is the most reliable guide.
