Author's words:
Fallout 4 Script Extender, or F4SE for short, is a modder's resource for extending Fallout 4's scripting capabilities. It does this without modifying the executable file on disk, so there are no permanent side effects.
Once installed, no additional steps are required to launch Fallout 4 with the F4SE add-on feature. You can use F4SE f4se_loader.exe from Installation (Manual)
Start game
Download F4SE from the Files tab.
Extract all files in the top-level folder in the ZIP to the game folder (where Fallout4.exe is located).
Use f4se_loader.exe to run the game.
To confirm that it is working properly, use the tilde (') key to open the console and type getf4seversion. This will display the version number of the current F4SE version.
Note: Because there are still players (such as me) who have not upgraded to the new generation, this post is restored to version V0.6.23, which is compatible with 1.10.163. I will open a separate version V0.72 that supports the new generation.
Install & use Install: follow the bundled instructions
- Unzip the archive from playbuff and read the bundled readme / instructions first.
- There is no universal mod manager for this game: some mods replace game files directly, some go into a game-specific Mods folder, and some need a game-specific community loader or tool first — follow the bundled readme.
- Place the files exactly as the readme says; mods with listed dependencies need those installed too.
- Launch the game to confirm it loaded; some games require enabling mods in settings or an in-game mod menu.
Install locations vary a lot between games and mods — the bundled readme is the most reliable guide.
