about
Now you see me...
This mod will make the nights in the Commonwealth darker. Not a lot, but dark enough that I guess you know the night has fallen without having to check the time on your lads. The interior can also become dark at night unless there is enough light. There are seven levels of darkness to choose from.
To see the mod in action, go to the mod videos section.
This mod provides a set of optional plugins that improve NPCs' ability to detect you in low-light conditions. There is a "calibrated" version for each of the seven darkness levels, but you can choose any of them if you're not happy with the defaults. What it does is that it allows NPCs to become alert (enter with caution) at about the same distance as vanilla.
This module offers an optional night vision option, but I recommend you try my humble other creation, Alternative Vision, which has a better field of view, is suitable for night telescopes, night people, and re-scopes, as well as more color and brightness options.
The new 24/7 night mode basically works 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. The sun still appears, but it doesn't seem to give any light. Note that this option is obviously not part of the lore and is mainly used in special "mod compilations" like Neon Wasteland.
PATCHES
This mod provides patches for other mods that change the same records so that they can work together. If this concept is new to you, think of it as simply merging the pieces of two mods into one mod. Patches usually only merge the specific parts of the two mods that caused the conflict. This means you still need to install the original mod when installing the patch.
There are two kinds of patches in this mod: 1) merged and 2) independent. The installer will ensure that the correct plugin is installed based on the selected options.
- The merged patch is part of the main plugin file, which is DarkerNights.esp. The file description indicates which merged patches it contains. They may include official DLC and major weather overhaul modes:
Far Harbor DLC
Nuka World DLC
True Storms Wasteland Edition 1.4 (compatible with 1.4.1)
Vivid Weathers Fallout 4 Edition 1.11 (compatible with 1.20 - 1.35)
- An independent patch is a separate plug-in file:
FogOut v6
Nuclear Weather 0.8
Radiation Clouds and Fog 1.3
The optimal load order when using my patch is shown below. Plugins not mentioned include my optional plugins DarkerNightsDetection.esp and BetterNightVision.esp which can be placed anywhere in the payload of older versions. If you have been using LOOT, then you can use it to automatically sort plugins.
Official DLC and major weather models first
Fallout4.esm
DLCCoast.esm
DLCNukaWorld.esm
TrueStormsFO4.esm
TrueStormsFO4-FarHarbor.esp
Vivid Weather - FO4.esp
Little weather plug-in
FogOut.esp
coreweather.esp
Radiant Clouds and Fogs.esp
Darker Nights main file (vanilla or incl. merged patches)
DarkerNights.esp
Independent patch final
DarkerNights-FogOut.esp
DarkerNights-NuclearWeather.esp
DarkerNights-Radiant.esp
Note that these patches are designed to provide darker nights for various weather models. Compatibility between plugins themselves is not intended. Moving plugins up and down (within the section above) might help, but I recommend consulting the corresponding author on this.

Starting with v1.11, some patches are merged into the main file, so plugin notifications may be lost when loading a saved game. You can refer to the main plugin description to double-check that the file contains all required merged patches, but the installer should do a good job. Make sure to uninstall any loose patches from earlier versions as well as the main files first.
Starting with v1.10, a new optional plugin adjusts NPC detection in less bright areas, which is part of the main mod file. If you have been using it, please uninstall or delete MoreDifficultSneaking.esp. New plugins are fine-tuned for each level of darkness, …
Install & use Install: follow the bundled instructions
- Unzip the archive from playbuff and read the bundled readme / instructions first.
- There is no universal mod manager for this game: some mods replace game files directly, some go into a game-specific Mods folder, and some need a game-specific community loader or tool first — follow the bundled readme.
- Place the files exactly as the readme says; mods with listed dependencies need those installed too.
- Launch the game to confirm it loaded; some games require enabling mods in settings or an in-game mod menu.
Install locations vary a lot between games and mods — the bundled readme is the most reliable guide.
