Manual installation

NOTE: As of v0.3, there are a lot of .esp files, you should only use ONE to make the mod work properly. I organize the folders in a similar way to the options you have on NMM, but it's still easy to screw up if not done properly. If you don't have any experience installing mods manually, then you should use NMM as it will automatically install the correct files based on your preference.

  • Download and unzip the file.
  • Browse the folder and select the desired option. Read the description above and check out the preview images to see what each one does.
  • Copy the .esp file of your choice to the Fallout 4\Data folder.
  • Go to the "Colors" folder. There are two other folders inside, "Main" and "Friendlies". Inside "Main" is the color of all NPCs or just hostile NPCs, depending on which version you choose. If you select a variant from the "Color Friendship" folder, the colors in the "Friendship" folder will only apply to friendly matches/neutrals.
  • Copy the "Textures" folder from inside the folder to your desired Fallout 4\Data folder. Note: If you want to change the colors of hostile and friendly/neutral NPCs, you must copy the "Textures" folder with the desired colors from the "Main" and "Friendlies" folders to the Fallout 4\Data folder.
  • Open the "plugins.txt" file (usually located in C:\Users\YOURUSERNAME\AppData\Local\Fallout4).
  • Add the plugin name (.esp) of your choice after the last line and save the file (for example, if you chose "CTHHostileNPCs.esp", you will need to add "CTHHostileNPCs.esp").
  • After loading the game, you may have to unequip and re-equip your Power Armor Helmet for the effect to work properly.

Manual uninstall

  • Delete the .esp file of your choice from the Fallout 4\Data folder.
  • Open the 'plugins.txt' file (usually located in 'C:\Users\YOUR USERNAME\AppData\Local\Fallout4').
  • Use the plugin of your choice (.esp) to delete the line and save the file (for example, if you selected "CTHHostileNPCs.esp", you will need to delete the line containing "CTHHostileNPCs.esp").
  • Go to Fallout 4\Data\Textures\Effects\Gradients and delete "PATargetingDetectGrad.dds". If you are using the plugin from Color Friendship, you will also need to delete "PATargetingDetectGradCTH.dds".

Install & use Install: follow the bundled instructions

  1. Unzip the archive from playbuff and read the bundled readme / instructions first.
  2. There is no universal mod manager for this game: some mods replace game files directly, some go into a game-specific Mods folder, and some need a game-specific community loader or tool first — follow the bundled readme.
  3. Place the files exactly as the readme says; mods with listed dependencies need those installed too.
  4. Launch the game to confirm it loaded; some games require enabling mods in settings or an in-game mod menu.

Install locations vary a lot between games and mods — the bundled readme is the most reliable guide.
