Companion combat distance improvement

This is my (original author Bingle, the same below) attempt to improve the combat reflexes of my companions.

The main issue with Fallout 4's companions is that they suffer from NPC detection settings, which are severely restricted to prevent bugs or some confusion that could occur in the Boston area due to the dense placement of NPCs.

They will now have a separate 5000 detection range and will be involved in combat once players begin combat.

Additionally, when your stealth meter exceeds the threshold with attack mode on, your companions will launch a preemptive strike.

The default threshold is 50% while standing and 75% while sneaking.

You can turn aggressive mode on/off by pressing a hotkey.

You can configure hotkeys and thresholds through the CCD.ini file located in Data\F4SE\Plugins.

Settings will be loaded on game launch and saved/loaded.

Binding keys

Keyboard: see

Mouse: LButton = 0x100, RButton = 0x101, M3 = 0x102, M4 = 0x103, M5 = 0x104

Handle: Check the code in CustomControlMap.txt in the Fallout 4 installation folder and add 0x10000 to it.

Ex) By default 0x200 right trigger, so enter 0x10200 in ini

For example, you can see that the default setting for ModeSwitchKey =0xBA0xBA is according to the document VK_OEM_1, which is ;: in the US standard keyboard.

Install & use Install: follow the bundled instructions

  1. Unzip the archive from playbuff and read the bundled readme / instructions first.
  2. There is no universal mod manager for this game: some mods replace game files directly, some go into a game-specific Mods folder, and some need a game-specific community loader or tool first — follow the bundled readme.
  3. Place the files exactly as the readme says; mods with listed dependencies need those installed too.
  4. Launch the game to confirm it loaded; some games require enabling mods in settings or an in-game mod menu.

Install locations vary a lot between games and mods — the bundled readme is the most reliable guide.
