Find books
This is a treasure hunt, so I won't spoil all your fun here. There are no quests or location markers. However, there is a treasure map with all the locations marked on it. You'll find this map, with a brief note on it, on the Angry Writer's desk in a beach house on the road from South Boston to Quincy, close to a particularly noisy quarry. Additionally, some included screenshots may point you in the right direction. All books have been hand-placed by me throughout the Commonwealth (none in Far Harbor or Nuka-World). To reduce the risk of conflict, I try to avoid placing these books in locations that many other mods have already touched. You'll find most of them scattered around in interior and exterior locations that aren't marked on the map and I think could use a little love: sheds, cabins, cellars, offices, and more. Places that are off the beaten track, often with a bit of exploration and a sense of adventure. Some places make a little sense, some don't. None of them are locked behind quests, none require joining a faction, and most don't require any special skills like lockpicking. All you have to do is find them.
(Well, if you take the time to read this: there is a pdf with spoilers in the download section.
Read books
Picking up a book for the first time triggers a pop-up message that includes a brief introduction to the author's philosophy (my interpretation) and a quote from this specific book. Most likely, these books will appear in your Pip-Boy inventory under "Miscellaneous/Notes." (I personally use the FallUI item sorter and rename anything to organize my inventory and categorize all my collectibles and valuables. You can now actually read your new book, at least part of it, a few pages to a few chapters (unfortunately, in some copyrighted cases, just a few sentences). Impress your ignorant gamer friends with your newfound knowledge of metaphysics, ethics, God, and the universe!
Customized bookcases
All books can be stored in the included custom bookcases (special thanks to RogueUnicorn for being so helpful with this). Currently, there are three different bookcases and a wall shelf, which can be built in Workshop mode (found under Furniture > Shelves). Once placed, the books will visually appear in the bookcase in the order you added them. After placing them, you can still read them by simply selecting the title. By accessing the bookcase itself, you can retrieve stored books and place them back into your inventory. You know, when you're out on a camping trip alone, or discussing it with your book friends at your local book club at Tuesday night philosophy night.
compatibility
This mod should be compatible with 99% of other mods, including mods that change locations and other treasure hunts. As mentioned, this mod tries to stay off the beaten path and uses custom meshes, materials, and textures. It is fully compatible and tested with other great treasur …
Install & use Install: follow the bundled instructions
- Unzip the archive from playbuff and read the bundled readme / instructions first.
- There is no universal mod manager for this game: some mods replace game files directly, some go into a game-specific Mods folder, and some need a game-specific community loader or tool first — follow the bundled readme.
- Place the files exactly as the readme says; mods with listed dependencies need those installed too.
- Launch the game to confirm it loaded; some games require enabling mods in settings or an in-game mod menu.
Install locations vary a lot between games and mods — the bundled readme is the most reliable guide.
