describe

Blue Hills Research Facility is a lore-friendly quest dungeon for players who enjoy atmospheric exploration, environmental storytelling, and challenging combat. Inspired by sci-fi horror movies (particularly the Alien series), this mod takes you deep into the ruins of a massive underground facility, where the U.S. Army and Vault-Tec worked on secret projects, and cutting-edge science has reached so far that something terrible has returned.

Features

A massive new dungeon: Explore a multi-level facility with 3 different interior cells: the administrative center, the reactor tunnels, and the basement bioengineering lab.

A new mission, "Suicide Squad," features puzzles, encounters, and a dramatic ending. You'll need to interact with the facility's switches, terminals, generators, and more to "wake it up" and progress further!

Environmental Storytelling: Uncover the truth by reading dozens of new terminal entries, notes (including voiceover holotapes), and piecing together evidence left behind by the doomed pre-war crew.

Custom Enemies: Not all threats are biological. Face off against the Prototype Automatons, a robotic enemy army designed by a talented C.I.T. alumnus and now controlled by an AI "C.O.R.E." facility.

Three unique legendary weapons

How to get started

When you enter the facility's main lobby, the mission "Crew Expendable" will begin.

The entrance is a small concrete bunker labeled "U.S. Army Pumping Station." It is located in the southern Commonwealth, in a swampy flatland area southwest of Quincy Quarry. Keep your eyes peeled for a small, inconspicuous concrete bunker.

🚨WARNING🚨: This is a difficult, mid-to-late game dungeon. Be prepared.

Background summary

In the final years before the nuclear war, a U.S. Navy submersible discovered the remains of a UFO off the Atlantic coast. The discovery, codenamed "Leviathan," included the remains of a Zeitan pilot, as well as an unknown alien life form within its cargo, which was quickly confiscated by the U.S. Army Biological Warfare Division.

To study them, the Army teamed up with Vault-Tec to build a self-contained secret underground complex south of Boston: the Blue Mountain Research Facility, which houses the latter's state-of-the-art ZAX supercomputer, called C.O.R.E., to "assist" facility operations. The site was chosen because of its defensible nature and the fact that it is relatively remote yet close to the Commonwealth's education capital, making it suitable for commuting. In addition to a permanent contingent of on-site Soldiers, the best and brightest from nearby Massachusetts Bay University and Commonwealth Institute of Technology are recruited into the facility's labs under confidentiality agreements. However, …

Install & use Install: follow the bundled instructions

  1. Unzip the archive from playbuff and read the bundled readme / instructions first.
  2. There is no universal mod manager for this game: some mods replace game files directly, some go into a game-specific Mods folder, and some need a game-specific community loader or tool first — follow the bundled readme.
  3. Place the files exactly as the readme says; mods with listed dependencies need those installed too.
  4. Launch the game to confirm it loaded; some games require enabling mods in settings or an in-game mod menu.

Install locations vary a lot between games and mods — the bundled readme is the most reliable guide.
