About this mod Machine translation

BethINI (pronounced "Bethany") attempts to restore decency to INI profiles for games created by Bethesda, while optimizing your game settings for optimal graphical fidelity and performance. It currently supports Oblivion, Skyrim, Skyrim Special Edition, Fallout 3, Fallout New Vegas and Fallout 4. It originated from my research on Skyrim INI files on STEP.

why do you need this

There are many advantages to using BethINI:

  • It automatically reorders your INI files into a reasonable order, making them easier to navigate for manual adjustments.
  • It automatically fixes common errors, including some that may cause CTD.
  • It automatically detects your installed mods and makes changes recommended by the mod author where appropriate. If you know of a mod or mods that needs such support please contact me as it's the easiest in the world to do.
  • Its presets outperform official presets created via the game launcher in terms of graphical fidelity and performance (95% of the time).
  • It allows modification of more settings than are accessible through the native game settings and provides a description of each setting and its function.
  • It automatically backs up your INI files.
  • For Skyrim, it automatically configures the Creation Kit to support multiple master servers and any installed DLC (if enabled).

TL; DR

BethINI repairs your INI files and allows you to adjust your INI files to improve performance and quality.

Install:

You can choose to install the standalone version or the AHK script version.

Standalone version notes:

BethINI standalone is a portable application. You can run it anywhere. Simply extract and run. Don't run it through Mod Organizer! Unfortunately, the standalone version can easily be flagged as a false positive by aggressive antivirus software, in which case you may want to use the AHK Script version.

AHK script version notes:

  • Download and install the latest Autohotkey v1.1.x installer:
  • Extract the BethINI zip file to the desired location.
  • Double-click BethINI.ahk to run.

Recommended usage:

  • Please do not delete your INI file before running this file!
  • Run BethINI
  • Mod Organizer users should go to the "Settings" tab and select the configuration file to use via the "INI Path" setting. Your profile should be automatically detected. If open, it is highly recommended to close Mod Organizer.
  • Click "Default". This will refresh the INI file to its default state.
  • Original Skyrim ENB users should check the "ENB Mode" checkbox. This does not apply to users who are only using the ENBoost part of ENB. This should be automatically detected, so if you're not sure, leave it alone!
  • Click on the desired preset.
  • Check the "Recommended adjustments" checkbox to apply adjustments recommended for all users.
  • Click the "Save and Exit" button.

Install & use Install: follow the bundled instructions

  1. Unzip the archive from playbuff and read the bundled readme / instructions first.
  2. There is no universal mod manager for this game: some mods replace game files directly, some go into a game-specific Mods folder, and some need a game-specific community loader or tool first — follow the bundled readme.
  3. Place the files exactly as the readme says; mods with listed dependencies need those installed too.
  4. Launch the game to confirm it loaded; some games require enabling mods in settings or an in-game mod menu.

Install locations vary a lot between games and mods — the bundled readme is the most reliable guide.
