Warning: If you are using the experimental Factorio 1.1, new bugs may appear over the next few days.
Welcome to space exploration.
Space Exploration is an overhauled mode all about unique experiences and challenges. After launching your rocket, you start discovering new planets, moons, asteroid belts, and other stars. You build a vast space station to serve as your primary research facility, explore new planets and moons, search for outposts of special resources, and gradually venture into the darkness of deep space as your interstellar empire expands.
There's a lot of stuff in the mod already, but it's still heavily under development and things are changing rapidly. For this reason, this mod is considered experimental (see below). There may be occasional bugs, but they will be resolved quickly.
Space exploration is not for you if:
You want to use a bunch of mods, conflict mods, or other overhaul mods at the same time.
You don't care about game balance, and you don't want a mod to balance things.
You don't want to start a new game, nor do you enjoy long gaming sessions.
Connecting circuit conditions to the interposer is too much for you.
Space exploration is right for you if:
You want to explore new worlds and new civilizations.
You want a polished, balanced, cohesive experience from a minimal mod list.
You want some truly new and unique game mechanics and challenges.
You want to progress and introduce new mechanics over the course of the 100+ hours of gameplay.
You enjoy uncovering secrets and puzzles.
The mod's focus on modular content experiences and challenges means that Space Exploration doesn't play well with many other mods. One of the main themes is interstellar logistics, which is driven by different resource and energy balances in different locations. It's easy for other mods to upset this balance, especially if the mod has a way to generate electricity without relying on solar energy or scarce resources. If you're starting your first space exploration game, you should only use recommended mods + can't-live-without quality-of-life mods, otherwise you won't have the background knowledge to understand what other mods break gameplay. The current mod compatibility situation will improve in the future, especially with other overhaul mods. (See experimental status below).
game progress
Space exploration games are long. The early game features conducting basic science in your hometown and launching satellite rockets into space.
Mid-game lets you build a research space station, explore new planets in search of strategic resources, and start using 4 specialized science packs. You have 4 specialized sciences to choose from, and your decision can be based entirely on the technology you want, but may also be influenced by the strategic resources you've discovered so far.
Later games will take you into deep space, expanding your interstellar empire, and devoting yourself to the intricacies of deep space science. Finally, you gain the ability to escape the cluster and win the game.
Explore new worlds
Over 600 new attractions - planets, moons, stars, asteroid fields and more. Each location has its own resource biases and challenges.
The planet you start on, Nauvis, is massive but ultimately limited. It's unlikely that you'll use up the resources it has, but your home won't have all the resource types you need to complete the game.
Other planets and moons have different sizes, resources, and climates. Tight integration with the Alien Biomes mod means ever …
Install & use Install: follow the bundled instructions
- Unzip the archive from playbuff and read the bundled readme / instructions first.
- There is no universal mod manager for this game: some mods replace game files directly, some go into a game-specific Mods folder, and some need a game-specific community loader or tool first — follow the bundled readme.
- Place the files exactly as the readme says; mods with listed dependencies need those installed too.
- Launch the game to confirm it loaded; some games require enabling mods in settings or an in-game mod menu.
Install locations vary a lot between games and mods — the bundled readme is the most reliable guide.
