Ultimate Performance Module (UPM)

Performance mod for EU5 1.2.x. The original game started out fast and then slowed down until the late-game calendar slowly crawled as the map filled with countries, characters, buildings, and trades. UPM eliminates the wasted work that the engine repeats every time, so the campaign maintains its speed to the end rather than gradually slowing down. It only changes the engine definition: no new content, no balance edits, no map changes, and can be safely added to existing saves.

Highlights

Full campaign speed: No late game crashes; 1700 and 1800 remain smooth.

Faster late game on matching hardware, getting the most bang for your buck on slower CPUs where vanilla struggles the most.

Definition only: no content cuts, no balance changes, no map changes, no save interruptions.

Insert: Add it to an existing campaign and continue playing.

Optional extras: Opt-in stability buffs, character culling, country pruning and tick add-ons, all turned off by default.

what it does

All changes are within the engine definition, there is nothing new and there are no balance changes.

AI Cadence: The AI re-examines cabinet selections, reforms, policies, perks, and diplomacy on a slower timer. It still makes the same decisions, it just stops remaking them every few weeks.

Trade and Building Evaluation: Largest single CPU cost in vanilla. UPM takes smaller samples and skips tiny unprofitable moves, achieving the same economics with far less search volume.

Construction Queues: Large empires no longer re-rank the same construction plans, while construction throughput remains unchanged.

Graphics and Events: Map markers are refreshed slightly less frequently, and each country is only checked for events that actually apply to it.

Built-in optional features (all turned off by default)

These functions are provided internally by UPM and do nothing until turned on.

Late Game Stability Buff: Starting at 1500, slows rebellion growth and stability decay, and accelerates population conversion, moving the world into a stable empire.

Character Culling: Prune unused characters to reduce late game memory and work per tick. Rulers, heirs, regents, heads of dynasties and entire ruling lineages are always protected.

Country Pruning: An in-game panel used to remove entire subcontinents from the simulation, resulting in massive speed improvements on focused maps.

Micropopulation: Merging micropopulations of the same type in one location to reduce the population without changing the total population.

Optional add-ons (separate workshop items)

Load individual mods on top of the UPM, starting with the base UPM.

UPM HOUR_TICK 47: Fastest option. Each tick advances the calendar approximately two days, roughly double the original throughput, and combat and movement are rescaled to match.

UPM Vanilla Tick: The most compatible option. Restore the original ticking clock to make combat and movement feel exactly like the original, while keeping UPM's AI, graphics and event work.

Use at most one tick add-on, and do not run it with Faster Universalis: they both set the same engine tick lever.

compatibility

EU5 version: 1.2.x

Requirements: None. Community Mod Framework is optional and is only required in the settings panel that controls built-in features.

Save Safe: Define only; load a normal or ongoing save and continue.

Achievements: Disabled while active, like any game mode.

Faster Universis: Use one of these; they cover the same bases and conflict on engines.

Install & use Install: follow the bundled instructions

  1. Unzip the archive from playbuff and read the bundled readme / instructions first.
  2. There is no universal mod manager for this game: some mods replace game files directly, some go into a game-specific Mods folder, and some need a game-specific community loader or tool first — follow the bundled readme.
  3. Place the files exactly as the readme says; mods with listed dependencies need those installed too.
  4. Launch the game to confirm it loaded; some games require enabling mods in settings or an in-game mod menu.

Install locations vary a lot between games and mods — the bundled readme is the most reliable guide.
