About this mod Machine translation
Oikumen: cultural place name
Current version: v0.8 – “Riga”
Oikumen is a cultural place name and name flavor mod for EU5.
It makes the map come alive linguistically. Cities, regions, provinces, dynasties, and characters are named after the culture, language, and empire that shaped them.
Starting with v0.6 "Lyon", this mod localizes place names and province names for all coverage areas.

About this project
Oikumen is built around the idea that conquest should not only change borders, but also change the language of the map.
Some names are historic. Other names are reconstructed, adapted, or localized to fit cultural naming conventions beyond their usual world. The goal is not mechanical translation, but a believable flavor of the language.
This is also a personal passion project. I'm a linguist and a long-time Paradox player. I first discovered Paradox games in the mid-2000s, and this mod is my way of giving back to the community that I've enjoyed over the years.

Compatibility and feedback
This mod should be Ironman compatible since EU5 1.3 Beta.
It should be compatible with most other mods. If another mod edits the same name list, load order may determine which names appear.
Please report misspellings, broken names, missing forms, inconsistent spelling, better historical or linguistic alternatives, or cultures you would like to see covered.
Install & use Install: follow the bundled instructions
- Unzip the archive from playbuff and read the bundled readme / instructions first.
- There is no universal mod manager for this game: some mods replace game files directly, some go into a game-specific Mods folder, and some need a game-specific community loader or tool first — follow the bundled readme.
- Place the files exactly as the readme says; mods with listed dependencies need those installed too.
- Launch the game to confirm it loaded; some games require enabling mods in settings or an in-game mod menu.
Install locations vary a lot between games and mods — the bundled readme is the most reliable guide.
