Dynamic market reserves and demand

Every market in EU5 has the same reserve capacity, so Cahokia and Constantinople hold the same amount of goods. When these reserves increase supply relative to the size of the reserves, prices collapse in small markets, while large markets have enough demand to absorb it. When prices collapse, regional goods producers (RGOs) are still producing goods at full capacity.

This mod adjusts reserve capacity based on market size, increases demand for goods for government spending, reduces RGO output when prices fall below baseline, and optionally disables citizen trade.

dynamic reserve

Reserve capacity is proportional to actual market size. Larger markets have higher demand, so additional supply from reserves has less of an impact on price. Markets with a total transaction value of more than 2,500 receive additional capacity; markets below this threshold have reduced capacity, with a minimum of 5%. As the economy grows during the game, the reserve capacity will also grow, and the entire system will always remain balanced.

RGO output responds to market price

When the market price of a commodity is lower than its base price, the RGO output of the commodity will decrease proportionally. A commodity trading at a price 20% below the benchmark will see its output fall by exactly 20%. The fine takes into account existing local and global output revisions, so the reduction in output is a true percentage of actual production rather than a simple cut. Any remaining penalties are fully lifted when the price moves back up to or above the benchmark.

This creates a natural supply adjustment: Oversupplied goods reduce production, thereby easing price pressure and helping the market find equilibrium rather than sinking into permanent surpluses.

Slider requirements

Money you spend on court, diplomacy, stability, and culture now translates into demand for goods from sources near you. Higher payouts mean more demand, but there are diminishing returns at larger amounts. Palace spending is split between a subcontinental goods basket and a religious basket, depending on your faith; the other three sliders only use the subcontinental basket.

The demand for goods from each nearby source depends on the subcontinent to which the location belongs. A nearby source in Western Europe would generate demand for furniture, fine cloths, glass, marble, and pearls. A nearby source in South Asia would create demand for silk, cotton, and spices. If your nearby source spans multiple subcontinents, the demand for your goods will vary from place to place. The same goes for court religious baskets: Christian court rituals called for wine, wheat, beeswax, and olives, while Muslim courts required coffee, sugar, pepper, and porcelain.

game rules

All systems are fully controllable through game rules and can be switched at any time during the game. Disabling a system will cleanly remove all of its effects at the next month's time. This should be done before removing the mod to ensure there are no residual effects.

Dynamic reserve: on/off (on by default)

Slider requirements: on/off (on by default)

RGO Price Response: On/Off (on by default)

Citizen Trade: On/Off (on by default). Disabling will remove all citizen trade abilities.

The system for defining reserve supply was tweaked and re-added in 1.3.2 (0-100% linear increase instead of vanilla's 50-75% range, 2.5% reserve as supply instead of 5%) and is always active and cannot be disabled (I tried adding this option, but it was not supported).

compatibility

Only compatible with version 1.3+. The system relies on modifiers that either do not exist or exist differently in 1.2.5.

No original files will be overwritten except for the market destruction action (which removes a temporary requirement check, which prevents the action). This should be compatible with almost all mods, unless it modifies the way the slider value is calculated, the basic way the market works, or overrides t …

Install & use Install: follow the bundled instructions

  1. Unzip the archive from playbuff and read the bundled readme / instructions first.
  2. There is no universal mod manager for this game: some mods replace game files directly, some go into a game-specific Mods folder, and some need a game-specific community loader or tool first — follow the bundled readme.
  3. Place the files exactly as the readme says; mods with listed dependencies need those installed too.
  4. Launch the game to confirm it loaded; some games require enabling mods in settings or an in-game mod menu.

Install locations vary a lot between games and mods — the bundled readme is the most reliable guide.
