Dark Souls 3 Mod Engine

Play Dark Souls 3 mods with easy installation, no need to unzip game files, no online ban required.

Mod Engine 0.1.12 has just been released! This update includes all improvements and bug fixes in the latest Sekiro Mod Engine, including:

  • AOB scan all function hooks, greatly improving general compatibility

*Rewrite the coverage parsing logic to solve the problem of finding game files

*Support chain loading of other dinput8 dll mod-based Boss Rush

Users who encounter problems or wish to link loaded dlls should try updating to this version.

Mod Engine is an injection DLL library that makes emulating game files very easy and safe. Gone are the days of having to use UXM and extract gigabytes of game files to play mods, or when you just wanted to mess around in a game and got banned. Mod Engine supports any mod that relies on file editing, including Cinders, Enemy Onslaught, and Archives of Doom. Playing DS3 mods is as simple as creating the folder, deleting the mod files and modifying the ini file to point to the mod directory.

Disclaimer: Mod Engine is designed to be compatible with the latest official Steam version of Dark Souls III. Older and unencrypted versions are not supported and may not work.

Install:

  • Copy dinput8.dll and modengine.ini to your DARK SOULS III\Game directory (usually located in C:\Program Files (x86)\steam\steamapps\common\DARK SOULS III\Game default installation)
  • Extract or copy the files for the mod you want to install to a new and unique directory within the DARK SOULS III\Game directory. For example, if you want to install Cinders, you should create a directory called cinders in DARK SOULS III\Game and copy all cinders files (data0.bdt, msg, map, event, etc.) into that directory.
  • Open modengine.ini and modify the modOverrideDirectory parameter to the folder where you installed the mod (currently requires the '\' character). For example, for ash you can change the line

modOverrideDirectory="\cinders"

  • Start the game. You will see the game try to connect to the internet and eventually fail. Once that fails, you should go into settings and set the game to launch in offline mode.
  • Enjoy your mod. If you want to play a different mod, change the modOverrideDirectory setting to point to a different folder with a different mod. Uninstall, delete or rename dinput8.dll.

Note: Some mods (such as Archives of Doom) may include their own modengine.ini that enables special settings required by the mod. In this case, follow its instructions and use its modengine.ini file as listed here.

Features:

*File overlay allows you to play any file-based mode without extracting game saves or patching exes

*Network blocking prevents the game from connecting to the internet while playing mods, so you won't be banned from using mods offline

  • Automatically use alternative save files for mods, so mods don't touch your vanilla save file and no backup is required

NOTE: The Mod Engine only supports file-based mods. Mods that require dll injection, such as DS3 boss rush, are currently not supported.

Install & use Install: follow the bundled instructions

  1. Unzip the archive from playbuff and read the bundled readme / instructions first.
  2. There is no universal mod manager for this game: some mods replace game files directly, some go into a game-specific Mods folder, and some need a game-specific community loader or tool first — follow the bundled readme.
  3. Place the files exactly as the readme says; mods with listed dependencies need those installed too.
  4. Launch the game to confirm it loaded; some games require enabling mods in settings or an in-game mod menu.

Install locations vary a lot between games and mods — the bundled readme is the most reliable guide.
