As the light dims, the chance of attacking a monster and being attacked by a monster increases.

realraid

✨ This is a quick change mod designed to make the raid mechanics in Darkest Dungeon more logical!

🎯 Core changes

This module adjusts the chance of raiding and being raided in the game so that it is closely related to **environment brightness**.

**Basic Rules (when fully lit):**

  • **When encountering in a hallway:** Your chance of surprising a monster is **0%** (the monster can see you coming).
  • **When encountering in a room:** Your chance of surprising a monster is **10%** (you break in).
  • **When exploring new areas:** You have a **10%** chance of being surprised by a monster.
  • **When exploring a visited area:** You have a **0%** chance of being surprised by a monster.

**Light effects (as the light becomes darker, add the following corrections to the above):**

  • **Brightness < 75%:** Raid chance **+3%**, Raid chance **+10%**.
  • **Brightness < 50%: ** Raid chance **+8%**, Raid chance **+25%**.
  • **Brightness < 25%:** Raid chance **+16%**, chance of being raided **+45%**.
  • **Brightness = 0%:** Raid chance **+25%**, Raid chance **+70%**.

⚖️ Adjustment of probability upper limit

To keep low light challenging, the mod sets a new chance cap:

  • **Maximum chance of raiding monsters** reduced to **45%**.
  • **Maximum chance of being attacked by monster** increased to **80%**.

**Why this change? **

The game mechanism will first determine whether the monster has been raided, and only when the monster has not been raided will it determine whether you have been raided. Therefore, the actual chance of being raided may appear to be much smaller.

  • Under vanilla settings, increasing the chance of being surprised to 65% will cause the maximum chance of being surprised to drop to only 22.75%. This will weaken the difficulty of low light under the logic of this module.
  • By setting a raid cap of 45%, the maximum chance of being raided will be limited to around 44%, making low-light environments **tough but fair**.

🔧 Unchanged content

All **Trinkets** and **Camp Skills** effects that affect raid chance remain unchanged.

**But please note:**

  • Even though unchanged, these effects become **more valuable** in this mod - they are now the only reliable way to reliably surprise in high light, and avoid being surprised in low light.
  • Remember, since the game first determines whether a monster is raided, **any buff that increases your chance of being raided is also a buff that reduces your chance of being raided**.

🔗 Compatibility

Only one file (`rules.json`) was modified, so conflicts with other mods should be minimal. If in doubt, just install this mod before other mods, at worst it will be overwritten.

📥 Installation and Uninstallation

**Install:**

Just overwrite the `shared` subfolder in the downloaded compressed package into your game directory.

**uninstall:**

  • Delete the `rules.json` file in the `shared` folder of the game directory.
  • Rename `rules-original.json` in the same folder to `rules.json`.
  • Everything will be restored to original settings.

Are you ready for a more logical dungeon adventure that tests your resource management (especially torches!)? Good luck, explorer!

Install & use Install: follow the bundled instructions

  1. Unzip the archive from playbuff and read the bundled readme / instructions first.
  2. There is no universal mod manager for this game: some mods replace game files directly, some go into a game-specific Mods folder, and some need a game-specific community loader or tool first — follow the bundled readme.
  3. Place the files exactly as the readme says; mods with listed dependencies need those installed too.
  4. Launch the game to confirm it loaded; some games require enabling mods in settings or an in-game mod menu.

Install locations vary a lot between games and mods — the bundled readme is the most reliable guide.
