dark dungeon

I really enjoyed Darkest Dungeon, but like many players, I didn't entirely agree with the design choices the developers made regarding certain game mechanics. I completely understand their intentions with the game, but I believe we have the freedom to shape the game the way we want to have fun with our own concepts.

✨ Mod Highlights

The beauty of this mod is that you don't need to add any additional effects to make it work. Another feature is that this mod is basically made up of different components. You can install only one part and ignore the other and it will still work. For example, you may only want hero balance adjustments and not inventory or speed changes. No problem, just copy the files you need. Since the file format is quite open, you can adjust some parameters and details yourself if you wish, but be careful, some adjustments may cause the game to crash or worse if you're not sure what you're doing.

Tested on an in-progress save and a new game, no issues in either case. If you encounter any bugs please report them, it's unlikely but still possible.

🎯 Design Goals

I've been making these adjustments for a while, purely for myself. Since I enjoyed these changes to the game so much, I thought I'd share them so maybe others will enjoy them too. Regarding these adjustments, I tried to retain the essence of the original "Darkest Dungeon" as much as possible. The only things I changed were the following points:

  • **Make the game more forgiving**: For players who are unfamiliar with the game's mechanics, or who want a less stressful, more relaxing dungeon crawl.
  • **Significantly reduce repeated brushing**.
  • **Increased diversity of career options and roles**. I'm not a fan of single-class stacking or other tricky tactics, although I don't have anything against players who do.
  • **Inspire Replay Value**: With this mod, you can complete the game faster than usual so you can start a new adventure. I personally don't like being stuck in a campaign for longer than I intend.
  • There are many other changes that are not worth listing, it’s best to experience them yourself, right?

But please don't misjudge, the early game may be easier, but if you are unlucky or poorly prepared, you may still be wiped out in level 5 and final dungeons, and sometimes even in level 3 dungeons, RNG (randomness) is still there. The overall difficulty hasn't really changed that much, I've just made it easier for you to recover from previous catastrophic failures more quickly, thus avoiding the extreme tedium associated with repetitive grinds in the original game.

📜 Update log

**Update 1.8** (Applies to version #15015)

**change:**

There are more changes this time. First make sure it works for the new version, updated the file structure. Secondly, now it will be a single file and there will no longer be optional sections as I don't think that makes much sense.

  • **Crossbowman's Battlefield Bandage** skill can now be applied to any position (original only allowed healing positions 3, 2, and 1), which makes more sense in my opinion.
  • Added color tooltip fix options if you don't like them and want to look like previous versions, I made some changes.

**New installation instructions:**

  • Use tools such as 7z to decompress the compressed package to any location.
  • Select and copy what you need to the game folder (usually `C:\Program Files\Steam\SteamApps\common\...`), overwriting when prompted.

**OPTIONAL STEPS:**

  • **Only copy the `heroes/musketeer` folder if** you own the Musketeer hero and want my class changes.
  • **Only if** you own Musketeer Heroes and want this fix, copy the `localization/dialogue.string_table.xml` file and then run the `localization.bat` file to integrate the changes in the game.
  • **Only copy the `colours/colours.darkest` file if** you need to remove the colored tooltips and make i …

Install & use Install: follow the bundled instructions

  1. Unzip the archive from playbuff and read the bundled readme / instructions first.
  2. There is no universal mod manager for this game: some mods replace game files directly, some go into a game-specific Mods folder, and some need a game-specific community loader or tool first — follow the bundled readme.
  3. Place the files exactly as the readme says; mods with listed dependencies need those installed too.
  4. Launch the game to confirm it loaded; some games require enabling mods in settings or an in-game mod menu.

Install locations vary a lot between games and mods — the bundled readme is the most reliable guide.
