Real Eurekas (vanilla, R&F)

New version 2.6 starting with 10.05 - updated with 2018 Spring Patch.

Let Eurekas be a real surprise! There are over 250 new ones, and they're randomly assigned to Techs and Civics. From now on, every game will be different.

This mod works with both the vanilla game and the Rise & Fall expansion.

How does it work?

The game provides a limited set of Eureka boosts that can actually be parameterized. Basically when there is some boost related to X, 'X' can change and 'something' can be something else. Theoretically any boost can be assigned to any technology/Civic, but in practice most such tasks don't make any sense - some kind of logic is required. By the way, this logic is explained in the Eureka popup - bet you never read those

Using this mechanism, I created over 200 new Eurekas. I managed to create 3-4 new Eurekas for almost every technology and citizen. But that's not all - they are randomly assigned at the beginning of the game. This means every game looks different. I've added some examples on the screenshots.

Custom promotion

I've created several custom boosts. These are all new and different from what the game offers. As for now there are ~45 custom boosts, all related to early game and capital and secondary city placement. Boosting depends on what is found nearby. For example:

  • If there are rainforest tiles or tundra, hills, etc. around.
  • If there are resources that can be mined later
  • When settling in the second city, there are desert tiles within the borders.
  • Discover the capital city adjacent to the mountain.
  • Place your first 2 cities in 2 potential quarries.
  • Compliant with industrial CS or any other genre.
  • Become the suzerain of religious CS.

Trigger visibility"

There is a launch option in Advanced Options that controls trigger information.

  • Always visible (same as vanilla game).
  • Visible when researchable (default).
  • Visible when you start researching Technology or Citizenship.
  • Only visible when enhancement is activated.

Activated boosts are always visible regardless of visibility options.

Sideffects

All of this has the disadvantage that boost definitions are not stored in the save file, but are considered part of the game configuration. Only the fact that a certain technology or Civic has been improved is stored in the save file. So when you reload the game, the boost definitions will change to a new random set, but the game will actually remember which specific techs and covics were boosted. Therefore, you might see a different description, or an event might be used again to trigger something else. In this case, please. Don't report this as a bug - it's expected.

What to report?

There are really many new enhancements and many possible combinations. I would appreciate any comments:

  • Wrong boost layout, i.e. it can't be triggered forever

-if it's too hard to get-since new ones tend to be difficult for vanilla people

  • Description - I have created many new explanations and descriptions, there are definitely some bugs

Want your own Eurekas?

You can come up with your own Eurekas - I'll be happy to include them in the mod. There are still so many techs and citizens (I'd say ~30) that I can't come up with more than 1 new upgrade. However, if you want to help me here, you need to provide an explanation. This is actually the hardest part so, in summary, three things need to be done:

  • An event is a new version of "X of something", or if you know how to reuse an existing version of it,
  • it improves

Technology/Civic, - Explain why this event inspired someone to invent a given technology/civic

Install & use Install: follow the bundled instructions

  1. Unzip the archive from playbuff and read the bundled readme / instructions first.
  2. There is no universal mod manager for this game: some mods replace game files directly, some go into a game-specific Mods folder, and some need a game-specific community loader or tool first — follow the bundled readme.
  3. Place the files exactly as the readme says; mods with listed dependencies need those installed too.
  4. Launch the game to confirm it loaded; some games require enabling mods in settings or an in-game mod menu.

Install locations vary a lot between games and mods — the bundled readme is the most reliable guide.
