Larger Worlds Larger Worlds
Bigger World 2.3 adds larger world sizes and a modified StartingPlots.lua file that scales major civilization starting locations to map size Big World
There are some basic functions:
New "massive" map size (116x74)
New "huge" map size (128x80)
Starting draw distance scales with number of players
Start drawing land area size limits
Starting position selection is now loosely based on map size rather than the original static value (9 tiles). This buffer is now determined by the default player count for the map size, so it will work with the default map and other mods that add or change the map size as long as they don't override AssignStartingPlots.lua. The base value is 1+ the default player count, so a map with a default of 8 players (standard size) will have a main civilization buffer of 9, while a huge map with 16 default players will try to push everyone to 17 chunks. This will also scale better when playing a map with less than the default number of players, where previously having fewer players increased the buffer by 1 tile (huh?), now it adjusts to increasing the buffer for fewer players or decreasing for more players.
With the exception of water maps (e.g. island tiles), the Landmass size limit for players is a minimum tile of 20+. Evaluate the map's total available land (not water or mountains) and use that count to determine the minimum land size for which multiple players are possible.
Example: A large (128x60) map with 60% water will have approximately 3000 tiles available. If there are 10 players in the game, the minimum landmass allowed for multiple players is 150 tiles on a land map or 100 tiles on a water map. So a 50 tile island is enough for starting players (20+), but too small for more than one player.
City-states have no land limit, so they will fill small patches of land and may spawn on land that is too small for multiple players.
Any feedback is welcome. I tried to keep this mod simple so it doesn't conflict with others, I missed the big maps of Civ 5 so I used these sizes for the new large and huge maps. I also don't like starting on top of my neighbors, even on large maps with less than the default number of players. I don't play small maps or crowded maps, so if anyone does this and can let me know if it works or breaks the game horribly, please help with the known issues:
Maps with more than default players may end up with fewer civilizations than expected
City-states will not all spawn on crowded maps, this can also happen on island tiles or similar maps with many small scattered landmasses using high sea levels
For version 2.0 forward, this mod only includes a larger map grid size and changes to the starting drawing script to scale the starting distance to the map size.
The detailed world is available here, including modified map scripts that were removed from this mod.
Larger Worlds 2.3 adds larger world sizes and a modified StartingPlots.lua file that scales major civ starting locations by map sizes
Larger Worlds has a few basic features:
New "Massive" Map size (116x74)
New "Enormous" Map Size (128x80)
Starting plot distance scaled by number of players
Starting plot landmass size restrictions
Starting location selection is now loosely based on map size instead of the original static value (9 tiles). This buffer is now determined by the default number of players for the map size so it will work with the default maps and other mods that add or change map sizes as long as they don't override AssignStartingPlots.lua. The base value is 1+ the default number of players, so a map with 8 players default (standard size) will have a major civ buffer of 9 while an enormous map with 16 players default will try to push everybody out to 17 tiles apart. This will also scale better when playing a map with fewer than the default number of players, previously having fewer players increased the buffer by 1 tile (yay?), now it adjusts to increase the buffer with fewer players …
Install & use Install: follow the bundled instructions
- Unzip the archive from playbuff and read the bundled readme / instructions first.
- There is no universal mod manager for this game: some mods replace game files directly, some go into a game-specific Mods folder, and some need a game-specific community loader or tool first — follow the bundled readme.
- Place the files exactly as the readme says; mods with listed dependencies need those installed too.
- Launch the game to confirm it loaded; some games require enabling mods in settings or an in-game mod menu.
Install locations vary a lot between games and mods — the bundled readme is the most reliable guide.
