Fish Farms fish farm

describe

The water tiles are terrible. I think almost everyone agrees with this. There is another mod that attempts to solve this problem and honestly I encourage you to check it out, it's pretty cool too. But I have a different idea to solve this problem.

Historically, civilizations have primarily used buildings to increase water production. Improvements to the sea tile can only be built by work ships from offshore resources. The above model takes this approach to problem solving, using the Docklands and its associated buildings and experts to improve the sea tiles.

However, my idea is to have players make improvements directly on coastal and ocean tiles using builders, which now build on piggyback. This mod allows you to build fishing boats (+1 food for starting) on tiles even if they don't contain the appropriate resources. It also provides similar fishing boat functionality to the farm, with adjacent enhancements from citizens and later technology. They won't end up being as powerful as farms, but farms compete with land for mines and area placement, so that's to be expected.

To use with another mod, such as Improved Water Tiles, delete the FishFarmsBuildings.xml and FishFarmsBuildingsText.xml files from the mod folder. Note that this will make the water tiles very nice and powerful, probably not recommended, but hey, it's your game!

Features (version 1.8.0)

Added the ability to build fishing boats on any coast or ocean tile, such as a farm on a grassland or plains.

The Naval Tradition civic allows fishing boats to act like a Feudalism farm, providing +1 food for each fishing boat with 2 fishing boats nearby.

Celestial Navigation technology adds an additional adjacency bonus of +1 fishing boat for every 2 adjacent fishing boats improved.

The reworked Pantheon only works on fishing boats on the Fish, Crabs, Whales, and Pearls resources (basically retaining its original functionality, it can't seem to retain it as is).

The lighthouse has been modified. It still has all the original yield, but also adds +1 food to the city's crab and fish resources.

The harbor has been modified. It no longer adds +2 gold. Instead, it adds +1 gold for each fishing boat improvement in the city. Other yields were unchanged.

Ports modified. It now also has two adjacency bonuses: +1 gold for every two adjacent coast tiles, and +3 gold when adjacent to the city center. Note that this is an indirect buffer to the shipyard.

Cities with seaport districts and commercial centers receive +2 gold from that city's trade routes.

It should now be properly co-operated with the Royal Naval Dockyards.

Planned future features

At this point I consider the mod to be fully functional, but feedback would be appreciated and helpful.

compatibility

The main files only modify the fishing boats and the Poseidon Pantheon, so any mod that doesn't mess up those two things should work just fine. It does not directly modify technology or citizens, only relevant text entries.

The harbor area and the lighthouse and harbor buildings are modified by two "building" files. If you don't want to use partition/build changes due to mod conflicts, you can delete the files "FishFarmsBuildings.xml" and "FishFarmsBuildingsText.xml" or replace them with blank XML files.

How to install

Extract to the My Games/Sid Meier's Civilization VI/Mods/ folder.

Additional information

I've never been a Civ model before. I generally don't do much modding, I made a Dominions 4 mod not too long ago. Everything seems to be working for me, but I apologize in advance if any part of my work is shoddy. Feedback is appreciated and I will do my best to make the mod play well.

Install & use Install: follow the bundled instructions

  1. Unzip the archive from playbuff and read the bundled readme / instructions first.
  2. There is no universal mod manager for this game: some mods replace game files directly, some go into a game-specific Mods folder, and some need a game-specific community loader or tool first — follow the bundled readme.
  3. Place the files exactly as the readme says; mods with listed dependencies need those installed too.
  4. Launch the game to confirm it loaded; some games require enabling mods in settings or an in-game mod menu.

Install locations vary a lot between games and mods — the bundled readme is the most reliable guide.
