About this mod Machine translation
City Name Generator City Name Generator
Rather than picking from the usual list of real place names, this mod attempts to create a new name for a city as it is founded, by stringing together words that fit the civilization and local landscape.
For example, a city founded by England, adjacent to rivers, forests, and livestock resources, might be named "Cowbridge Wood."
The translated meanings of these names can be read in the map tooltip when you hover over the city center.
Names can also change dynamically when certain events occur. For example, "Cowbridge" might become "Cowminster" if the first area it was built in was a Holy Land.
Applies to all vanilla and DLC civilizations. No DLC required.
Civilizations added by mods will not be affected and will use their default names.
This mod includes a modified version of PlotToolTip.lua to add etymology to tooltips in city centers. It will conflict with any other mod that replaces the same file (i.e. any mod that changes the tooltip).
If this is a problem for you then just delete the UI folder in this mod. The rest of the mod works fine, you just won't get the etymology in the tooltip.
Instead of picking from the usual list of real place-names, this mod attempts to create a new name whenever a city is founded, by stringing together words appropriate for the civilization and the local landscape.
For example, a city founded by England, next to a river, a forest and a cattle resource, might get named "Cowbridge Wood".
The translated meaning of these names can be read in the map tooltip when hovering the mouse over a city centre.
Names can also change dynamically when certain events occur. For example, "Cowbridge" might become "Cowminster" if the first district it builds is a holy site.
Works for all vanilla and DLC civs. Does not require DLC.
Civs added by mods will not be affected, and will use their default names.
Compatibility
This mod includes a modified version of PlotToolTip.lua, in order to add etymologies to tooltips of city centres. It will conflict with any other mod which replaces the same file (i.e. any mod which changes tooltips).
If this is a problem for you then simply delete the UI folder inside this mod. The rest of the mod will work fine, you just won't get the etymologies in tooltips.
Install & use Install: follow the bundled instructions
- Unzip the archive from playbuff and read the bundled readme / instructions first.
- There is no universal mod manager for this game: some mods replace game files directly, some go into a game-specific Mods folder, and some need a game-specific community loader or tool first — follow the bundled readme.
- Place the files exactly as the readme says; mods with listed dependencies need those installed too.
- Launch the game to confirm it loaded; some games require enabling mods in settings or an in-game mod menu.
Install locations vary a lot between games and mods — the bundled readme is the most reliable guide.
