AI improvements

Update: Now with Rise & Fall

Hi Compatibility, this mod will be an ongoing project to try and make the Civ VI AI more competitive.

In this project I will try to keep the following points as a design philosophy:

  • Completely stick to changes that only affect the AI and not the larger game.
  • There is no change in AI difficulty rewards
  • Improve the AI's ability to win without using cheesy tactics that reduce the fun of the game, such as all players declaring war when a player encounters him.
  • Maintain and improve the AI's "flavor" through unique personalities and gameplay.

change

  • The ability of AI to engage in aggressive warfare. They will acquire more troops faster and will use them more efficiently. It won't be distracted by enemy units, won't retreat as quickly, will stick more to swarm formation, and will be less likely to stare at your city. It will also maintain pressure throughout the game and is now able to capture late game walls. Occasionally you'll see one civilization completely take over another.
  • Resolved behavior, it now establishes a more suitable position faster.
  • Adjusted AI production options. Additional changes based on whether you are at war or under siege. Is it religious, what difficulty settings do we have, etc. Overall, you should see the AI develop bigger, better cities without neglecting their armies.
  • Leaders now have more distinct personalities when it comes to district/building/unit/etc. selection.
  • Many other small improvements.

limit

Unfortunately, this work has some big limitations. The worst part of course is that we don't have access to the game code, so most of the work I can do is work within the system designed by Firaxis. This provides some flexibility, but there are a lot of areas that I simply can't touch on, such as many details about combat behavior, policy choices, repair improvements, unit upgrades, agenda logic and much of the diplomacy system.

On top of that, testing changes takes a long time, so changes will be slow.

Any feedback on AI behavior and balance with and without this mod would be greatly appreciated. Especially in later eras, the game is slower and difficult below water maps and princes.

At this point, the AI definitely feels more solid than it did in the base game, but it's still not anywhere near the level of an actual player. I'd say it's now at a similar or slightly higher level than unmodified Civilization V AI, with different weaknesses and strengths. However, since the AI bonuses in Civilization VI are much lower, the game will probably still be easier.

Other mods and compatibility

Please note that this mod will eventually perform poorly against other mods that affect the AI, as well as mods that affect certain gameplay aspects such as production costs. In most cases, it causes minor problems at best.

This mod already contains some of the more important fixes made by Delnar Ersike in Delnar's AI Cleanup, and I wouldn't recommend running them together right now.

You may find some mods worth considering that can help make the game more difficult, as they can help the AI perform better:

  • RushSecond is more difficult
  • Rebalancing of strategic resources and technology trees for November Doctrine
  • Gort's siege help
  • Rocketboots by Quo by isau

Install & use Install: follow the bundled instructions

  1. Unzip the archive from playbuff and read the bundled readme / instructions first.
  2. There is no universal mod manager for this game: some mods replace game files directly, some go into a game-specific Mods folder, and some need a game-specific community loader or tool first — follow the bundled readme.
  3. Place the files exactly as the readme says; mods with listed dependencies need those installed too.
  4. Launch the game to confirm it loaded; some games require enabling mods in settings or an in-game mod menu.

Install locations vary a lot between games and mods — the bundled readme is the most reliable guide.
