Custom HUD D-pads based on official controller photos and renders.

About this mod Author’s original text

TalkyPup's Photo D-pad Pack

Replaces the on-screen D-pad on the HUD with an official photo/render of a different controller's D-pad.

I started looking into modding Zelda 64: Recompiled because I wanted to see if I could change the D-pad and the colours of the UI buttons to match my actual controller, like you can do in Ship of Harkinian. Looks like the button colour thing is beyond my abilities, so I just did the D-pads instead. The photo/render style was the quickest way to get things going. It might clash with the game's art style, but at least it matches my controllers now. I may or may not make some more fitting glyphs and release them as a separate pack. If anyone reading this actually knows what they're doing, please consider making a mod to change the button colours.

Compatibility/Setup

If you're using this with another texture mod that alters the D-pad (e.g. MMN64HD or MM Reloaded), make sure that this mod goes above those. Otherwise this mod won't do anything, and you'll see that mod's D-pad texture instead.

This pack will add each D-pad as a seperate mod. You might want to delete a few of the ones you're not going to use. If adding a configure menu to texture mods becomes possible/easier in the future, I might combine them into one mod then.

Included D-pads

  • Xbox Series X Controller
  • Xbox 360 Controller
  • DualSense (PS5)
  • DualSense (PS5) - Black
  • Nintendo Switch Pro Controller
  • Steam Deck
  • Steam Deck - Left trackpad
  • Steam Controller - Left trackpad

Plans for Future Releases

I often set these kinds of goals for myself and don't actually meet them. This is what I'd like to do, but no promises.

  • More controllers
  • Xbox One Controller
  • Xbox One Elite Controller
  • DualShock 4 (PS4)
  • DualShock 3 (PS3)
  • Nintendo Switch Joy Cons
  • Wii U Pro Controller
  • Logitech F310/F710
  • Different colours/variants
  • The newer Xbox 360 Controller with the rotating D-pad
  • A separate pack with 2D glyphs that better match the game's style (feel free to beat me to it)
  • Port the mod to Ship of Harkinian and 2 Ship 2 Harkinian.
  • Not currently planning on doing these, but that could change.
  • Nintendo Switch 2 Joy Cons (Too similar to Switch 1)
  • Nintendo Switch 2 Pro Controller (Too similar to Switch 1)
  • Nintendo GameCube controller (Too similar to N64)
  • 8BitDo's Nintendo-esque controllers (Too similar to N64)
  • Anything with too few buttons for the game

Special Thanks

  • Nerrel and GhostlyDark for their excellent texture packs.
  • Wiseguy, Dario, and everyone else who made N64 Recompiled and RT64 possible.

Install & use Install: follow the bundled instructions

  1. Unzip the archive from playbuff and read the bundled readme / instructions first.
  2. Most mods rely on the game's mod loader — the usual route is a community mod manager (such as r2modman): pick this game, install, and it handles the loader and dependencies.
  3. For a manual install, put the mod files into the matching Mod / plugins folder inside the game directory.
  4. Launch the game to confirm it loaded; mods with listed dependencies need those installed as well.

Install locations vary a lot between mods — the bundled readme is the most reliable guide.
