A practice wooden crossbow/arbalest in the style of the other original wooden weapons.

About this mod Author’s original text

Wooden Crossbow

A practice wooden crossbow/arbalest designed in the style of Valheim's vanilla wooden weapons.

The Wooden Crossbow serves as a low-damage training tool—ideal for practicing on Archery Targets to level up your Crossbow skill without destroying targets or wasting expensive high-tier bolts.

To preserve authentic game progression, the Wooden Crossbow requires both acquiring a vanilla crossbow (such as the Arbalest) and craft materials, including Mistlands-tier Yggdrasil Wood, to unlock the recipe at the Workbench.

Features

  • Vanilla-Friendliness: Designed to look and feel like a native addition to Valheim's wooden weapon tier.
  • Low-Damage Training Tool: Very low damage (1), slower projectile velocity, slightly faster reload speed and zero recoil pushback on the player.
  • Aesthetic: Uses wood material textures from vanilla wooden weapons.
  • Custom Sound Design: Blends original mechanical snap with bowstring release for a softer firing sound.
  • Progression Integration: Integrated recipe unlock progression tied to discovering original crossbow weapons and necessary materials (Wood, Fine Wood, Yggdrasil Wood, Root).
  • Fully Configurable: Tweak weapon damage, reload speed, knockback, recoil, and projectile speed via BepInEx config.
  • Server Sync Ready: Built for multiplayer compatibility.

  • Multiplayer: These settings are synchronized from the server to all connected clients. Client-side values are ignored while connected to a multiplayer server.
  • Good to know: Stat changes require a game restart to update prefab properties in memory.Weapon prefabs initialize stats on registration; restart the game after changing config values for them to take effect on item instances.

Compatibility

Wooden Crossbow is built using Jötunn and should be compatible with most Valheim mods, including item, asset, and combat overhaul mods.

Install & use Install: BepInEx plugin

  1. The archive from playbuff is the mod itself — usually a BepInEx plugin (a .dll or a plugin folder once unzipped).
  2. Recommended: use a community mod manager (such as r2modman) — pick this game, import the mod, and the manager sets up BepInEx and its dependencies for you.
  3. Manual route: install the BepInEx loader in the game folder, then drop the unzipped .dll or plugin folder into BepInEx/plugins/.
  4. Launch the game — the BepInEx console logs every plugin it loads; seeing this mod in the log means it is installed.

Mods with listed dependencies need those installed too, or they will not load. Options are usually changed in-game or in the plugin's config file. In multiplayer, the host and every client need the same mods installed.
