About this mod Author’s original text

VanillaNPC

NPCs that live and work around your base — built entirely from the game's own parts, so they look like they were always there.

  • A fisherman who works for coins and bait and gets better with every biome.
  • Guards for hire who wear the gear you give them, follow you and never die.
  • A tavern: meads for sale, a drunkard who knows where the traders are, and regulars who make the place feel alive.
  • Bandit raids that begin once you have someone to defend your home.

Formerly Fjord Folk. If you have FjordFolk installed, uninstall it: VanillaNPC replaces it (while FjordFolk is installed, VanillaNPC does not load), and a fisherman you have already built stays where he is.

The fisherman

Hammer → Misc → Fisherman's Spot: the materials of a stool, a fishing rod and 300 coins.

  • Near water only, one per world. Height doesn't matter: a jetty or a cliff works too.
  • He can't be hurt, and can't be dismantled while he still holds your coins, bait or catch.

Press E to open his window, laid out like a workbench:

  • Work. Give him coins: he takes a small, luck-based fee for every fish. Give him bait: the bait decides the fish, whatever biome he sits in, and you pick which bait he uses. Every fish costs one bait. The catch goes into a basket of 60 — take it whenever you like.
  • About one fish every two minutes, and he keeps working while you are away (up to one in-game day).
  • Upgrade. Mastery rises one level per biome, eight in all, paid in that biome's trophies (×8, ×4, ×2) shown like crafting requirements. Every level lowers his fee; at the top he charges half. His level is the star in the corner of the window.

And one more thing: once he works for you, someone from his family might turn up at your door now and then…

The recruiter and the guards

Hammer → Misc → Recruiter: 10 wood, a silver necklace, 2 deer trophies, 2 boar trophies and 100 coins. One per world. Press E to open the game's own crafting window:

  • Hire a guard by buying his banner for 300 coins. There are five guards, each with his own face, banner colour and way of talking; a guard who already serves you can't be hired twice.
  • Upgrade a banner: eight levels, one per biome, for amber, amber pearls or rubies and a trophy of that biome.
  • Set up the banner with the Hammer → Misc: two poles, the banner, a chest, a spear and a shield. The guard comes and serves at that post.
  • The chest is his gear: he wears the best armour, melee weapon and shield in it (bows are left alone). Swap it any time.
  • Health 25, plus 25 for every banner upgrade — up to 225. To upgrade, take the banner down with the hammer (it keeps its level, the chest drops its contents, the guard leaves), upgrade it at the recruiter and set it up again.
  • E — follow me / stay here. Shift+E — back to your post (not while enemies are near).
  • He defends you, joins your fights and catches up with you, through portals too.
  • A guard never dies. At zero health he is badly wounded: he kneels and is marked on the map. Press E on him with a healing mead in your inventory to get him back on his feet.

The tavern

Everyone comes with a seat of his own, built with the Hammer → Misc:

  • Innkeeper — the materials of a stool and 10 bronze. He sits on his stool and gets up when you come over. E opens the game's own shop window with the meads you already know how to brew, from 30 to 200 coins depending on the biome of their ingredients. He sells; he doesn't buy.
  • Drunkard — the materials of a chair. Buy him a drink — a healing mead that suits your world's progress, and 400 coins — and he marks on your map the nearest trader you haven't found yet (Haldor, Hildir, the Bog Witch or the idol forge).
  • Two regulars — the materials of a chair and 100 coins each. They sit, drink and now and then get up to dance.

Bandit raids

Once you hire your first guard, the forest brothers start raiding the Meadows and the Black Forest.

  • A raid of the game's own kind, with its warning and music — anywhere i

Install & use Install: BepInEx plugin

  1. The archive from playbuff is the mod itself — usually a BepInEx plugin (a .dll or a plugin folder once unzipped).
  2. Recommended: use a community mod manager (such as r2modman) — pick this game, import the mod, and the manager sets up BepInEx and its dependencies for you.
  3. Manual route: install the BepInEx loader in the game folder, then drop the unzipped .dll or plugin folder into BepInEx/plugins/.
  4. Launch the game — the BepInEx console logs every plugin it loads; seeing this mod in the log means it is installed.

Mods with listed dependencies need those installed too, or they will not load. Options are usually changed in-game or in the plugin's config file. In multiplayer, the host and every client need the same mods installed.

Install these first, or the mod will not work:
