Quality-of-life tweaks for Valheim. Every feature has its own switch in
BepInEx/config/mh.ValheimUtilsByAi.cfg (generated on first launch). Each feature states
whether it runs on the client, the server, or both.
Features
Craft without roof ([Crafting] CraftWithoutRoof, default: on)
The vanilla game refuses to open a workbench, forge or any other crafting station that is
not under a roof or is "too exposed". This removes that check. Everything else is untouched:
a forge still needs fire, stations still need their extensions in range, build pieces still
need a station nearby.
Side: Client. Other players do not need the mod. Works on vanilla servers.
Kiln wood filter ([Crafting] KilnWoodFilter, default: on)
The charcoal kiln only accepts the wood types listed in [Crafting] KilnAllowedWood
(comma-separated item prefab names, default: Wood). Any other wood is refused with the vanilla
"won't work" message, and pressing E with only unlisted wood in the inventory says there is nothing to
process. Smelters and blast furnaces are untouched. Vanilla kiln wood: Wood, FineWood, RoundLog, Blackwood.
Side: Client. Only players running the mod are restricted; a player without it can still add any wood.
Auto storage ([Crafting] AutoStorage, default: on)
Adds two craftables:
- AutoStorage chest (Hammer > Misc, workbench): 10 Fine Wood, 2 Surtling Cores, 5 Greydwarf Eyes, 1 Bronze. 32 slots.
- AutoStorage Hammer (workbench): 3 Wood, 1 Surtling Core.
Hold the AutoStorage Hammer and left-click a processing piece, then left-click an AutoStorage chest to link them.
Linked pieces take their inputs from that chest and put their products into it, with no pickup radius or area:
you choose every connection. Click the same piece and chest again to unlink; click a chest with nothing
selected to unlink every piece connected to it. While the hammer is held, green lines show existing links and a
yellow line follows the selected piece. The hammer never builds or repairs.
| Piece | Takes from chest | Puts into chest |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Charcoal kiln | wood (respects the kiln wood filter) | coal |
| Smelter, blast furnace, eitr refinery | ore / scrap / soft tissue, coal or sap | bars, eitr |
| Spinning wheel, windmill | flax, barley | linen thread, barley flour |
| Beehive, sap extractor | - | honey, sap |
| Cooking station, iron cooking station, stone oven | raw food, wood for the oven | cooked (or burnt) food |
| Fermenter | base mead | mead |
Vanilla rules stay: fire, fuel, roof, cover and biome requirements are untouched, the chest must have room or
the product drops on the ground as usual, and nothing moves while a player has the chest open.
[Crafting] AutoStorageMaxLinkDistance (default 100 m) caps the link length. Pieces are only simulated near a
player, so a chest more than roughly 64 m from its piece may not be loaded and the piece then idles.
Side: Both. The mod (and Jötunn) must be installed on the server and on every client, otherwise the custom
chest and hammer do not exist for them. Turning the feature off keeps both craftable but stops linking and
automation.
Install
Drop ValheimUtilsByAi.dll into BepInEx/plugins or install with a mod manager. Requires
Jötunn.
Install & use Install: BepInEx plugin
- The archive from playbuff is the mod itself — usually a BepInEx plugin (a .dll or a plugin folder once unzipped).
- Recommended: use a community mod manager (such as r2modman) — pick this game, import the mod, and the manager sets up BepInEx and its dependencies for you.
- Manual route: install the BepInEx loader in the game folder, then drop the unzipped .dll or plugin folder into BepInEx/plugins/.
- Launch the game — the BepInEx console logs every plugin it loads; seeing this mod in the log means it is installed.
Mods with listed dependencies need those installed too, or they will not load. Options are usually changed in-game or in the plugin's config file. In multiplayer, the host and every client need the same mods installed.
Install these first, or the mod will not work:
