Unswayed

Eliminate the rigid 1.0 locomotion stride bobbing, prevent suffocating camera crushing in burial crypts, unlock adaptive shoulder sightlines, and conquer motion sickness in Valheim.

Compatibility: Valheim 1.0.0-1.0.16; latest build, camera Harmony target, and isolated boot verification completed on 1.0.16. See the fleet compatibility evidence.

🎯 The Request & Origin

"Anyone make a mod to restore the pre 1.0 run animations yet? All that rigid bobbing is giving me vertigo. Especially in the burial crypts."

— Crusnik, Valheim Modding Community

In the Valheim 1.0 (Deep North) update, Iron Gate overhauled player locomotion blend trees (Player.controller). While the new run animation introduces a springier stride cadence, Valheim's GameCamera anchors its third-person target directly to Character.m_eye—a child transform of the animated cervical/head bone.

In the open world (at 4–6 meters distance), Vector3.SmoothDamp softens this bounce. But inside Burial Crypts, Sunken Crypts, and Frost Caves, narrow stone corridors trigger GameCamera.CollideRay2(), which aggressively clamps camera distance down to less than 1 meter right behind the Viking's neck.

At point-blank range:

  • 100% of the raw stride bounce is projected directly across the player's viewport.
  • The bobbing character model occludes over 70% of the screen.
  • Flickering torch shadows and tight walls create an acute visual-vestibular conflict that induces headaches, nausea, and vertigo.

Instead of waiting for an asset-swapping AnimatorOverrideController that breaks across game sub-patches, Unswayed solves the problem at the camera anchor level: zero dependencies, zero asset bloat, and total ergonomic stability.

⚡ Core Features

  • Head-Bob Decoupling & Stride Stabilization

Overrides GameCamera.GetCameraBaseOffset() to anchor the third-person camera to a stable, root-relative pivot (Vector3.up * 1.65m). The camera tracks ground movement seamlessly across hills and terrain while remaining unaffected by vertical head-bone keyframe bounces.

Install & use Install: BepInEx plugin

  1. The archive from playbuff is the mod itself — usually a BepInEx plugin (a .dll or a plugin folder once unzipped).
  2. Recommended: use a community mod manager (such as r2modman) — pick this game, import the mod, and the manager sets up BepInEx and its dependencies for you.
  3. Manual route: install the BepInEx loader in the game folder, then drop the unzipped .dll or plugin folder into BepInEx/plugins/.
  4. Launch the game — the BepInEx console logs every plugin it loads; seeing this mod in the log means it is installed.

Mods with listed dependencies need those installed too, or they will not load. Options are usually changed in-game or in the plugin's config file. In multiplayer, the host and every client need the same mods installed.
