Stjarna

v0.1.0·Updated 2026-09-27

Item quality is drawn as stars across the top of the icon, filled for the upgrades you have and hollow for the ones still to come, instead of a small number in the corner of the slot.

About this mod Author’s original text

Stjarna

Item quality shown as stars on the icon, instead of a small number in the corner of the slot.

Valheim writes an item's upgrade level as a digit tucked into the corner of its inventory slot,

and shows nothing at all on the hotbar. Stjarna draws a row of stars across the top of the icon:

filled for the upgrades an item has, hollow for the upgrades it can still take.

What It Does

  • Stars on inventory slots, chest slots and the hotbar
  • A hollow star for each upgrade still available, so a slot shows how far a piece can go as well

as how far it has come

  • A gold row on a fully upgraded item
  • Stars on the crafting and upgrade list

On slots that show a keybind number, the row moves to the right so the number stays readable.

Stjarna does not change what an upgrade costs, what it does, or how many an item can take.

What It Leaves Alone

  • Items at quality 1. Everything you craft starts there, so a star on every item would tell you

nothing. Turn them on with ShowQualityOne

  • Items that cannot be upgraded at all, such as materials, food and arrows
  • Items that can take more than six upgrades. Those keep the game's own number, which is easier

to read than a long row of small stars. MaxPips sets the limit

  • The tooltip, which still lists quality as a number

If Something Looks Wrong

Check BepInEx/LogOutput.log for a line starting Stjarna:. If a Valheim update has moved

something, the log names which part stopped working and what you will notice. That is worth

reporting.

BetterUI has a quality stars feature of its own. With both installed you will see Stjarna's.

To use BetterUI's instead, set Enabled and HotbarEnabled to false under [ItemLevelStars]

in zenox.betterui.cfg.

If the stars sit too close to something another mod draws on your slots, VerticalOffset moves

the row and Scale makes it smaller.

Installing

Client only. A server install does nothing, and other players do not need it.

Install & use Install: BepInEx plugin

  1. The archive from playbuff is the mod itself — usually a BepInEx plugin (a .dll or a plugin folder once unzipped).
  2. Recommended: use a community mod manager (such as r2modman) — pick this game, import the mod, and the manager sets up BepInEx and its dependencies for you.
  3. Manual route: install the BepInEx loader in the game folder, then drop the unzipped .dll or plugin folder into BepInEx/plugins/.
  4. Launch the game — the BepInEx console logs every plugin it loads; seeing this mod in the log means it is installed.

Mods with listed dependencies need those installed too, or they will not load. Options are usually changed in-game or in the plugin's config file. In multiplayer, the host and every client need the same mods installed.
