Overview
Rare Magic Portal Plus (RMPP) expands Valheim's portal system from a simple teleport link into a configurable travel network for servers, co-op worlds, and custom gameplay setups.
With RMPP you can keep portals close to vanilla, or turn them into a progression system with portal colors, portal modes, crystals, keys, portal fluid, admin controls, ship portals, and optional TargetPortal integration.
This mod is especially useful if you want to:
- restrict who can build or use certain portals
- create more meaningful travel and progression
- support themed portal networks for servers or events
- customize portal visuals and behavior without needing multiple portal mods
RMPP is a large mod with many options, but most advanced systems are optional. You can start with a simple setup and enable additional features later.
By default, players can build portals normally, and many of the more advanced restrictions are left off until you choose to enable them.
Start Here
If this is your first time using RMPP, use this simple setup first:
- Install the mod and launch the game once to generate the config.
- Leave most settings at their defaults.
- Try the default portal behavior with the added portal types.
- If you want more visual flavor, enable Portal Images.
- If you want more control, next try Only Admin Can Build, portal limits, or item restrictions.
- Only enable advanced systems like TargetPortal Mode, YAML access control, or economy-style crystal/key setups when you actually need them.
Recommended First-Time Setup
- Keep portal modes mostly on their defaults
- Leave TargetPortal integration optional
- Enable portal images if you want extra teleport visuals
- Use admin build restrictions only for managed servers
- Ignore YAML editing until you want per-portal access rules
Good Fit For
- server admins who want more control over travel
- co-op groups that want progression-based portals
- players who want more portal variety and visuals
- modpacks that need one portal system with lots of options

The Vision
The idea behind Rare Magic Portal Plus (RMP) was straightforward: portals felt too overpowered, and I wanted to introduce mechanics that balanced their convenience with meaningful strategy. At the same time, I understood how crucial portals are for navigating dungeons and exploring the world. When Target Portal was released, I saw an opportunity to support its functionality while expanding on my vision.
For large servers, the demand for more portal prefab options was clear, and I realized this mod could potentially become a valuable contribution to the community. After dedicating over two years of work conceptualizing, refining, and developing RMP, it has become the feature-rich mod it is today.
Though the mod is completely free for several reasons, your contributions are always appreciated. If you like to support my efforts, your generosity helps keep the magic flowing and inspires me to continue enhancing th
Install & use Install: BepInEx plugin
- The archive from playbuff is the mod itself — usually a BepInEx plugin (a .dll or a plugin folder once unzipped).
- Recommended: use a community mod manager (such as r2modman) — pick this game, import the mod, and the manager sets up BepInEx and its dependencies for you.
- Manual route: install the BepInEx loader in the game folder, then drop the unzipped .dll or plugin folder into BepInEx/plugins/.
- Launch the game — the BepInEx console logs every plugin it loads; seeing this mod in the log means it is installed.
Mods with listed dependencies need those installed too, or they will not load. Options are usually changed in-game or in the plugin's config file. In multiplayer, the host and every client need the same mods installed.
Install these first, or the mod will not work:
