Quads Companion
A viking companion, a follower NPC who plays like a player: comes on your adventures, fights beside you, lives its own life at home, and gets better as it goes.
About this mod Author’s original text
Option 1: the one-step installer (Windows, Steam), easiest
It installs BepInEx (the mod loader), ScriptEngine (lets mods reload without restarting), the mod manager and every mod in this repo.
Close Valheim, open PowerShell and paste:
[Net.ServicePointManager]::SecurityProtocol = [Net.SecurityProtocolType]::Tls12
Invoke-WebRequest " -OutFile "$env:TEMP\install-valheim-mods.ps1"
powershell -ExecutionPolicy Bypass -File "$env:TEMP\install-valheim-mods.ps1"
If it cannot find the game, add -ValheimDir "D:\SteamLibrary\steamapps\common\Valheim" to the last line (in Steam: right-click Valheim,
Manage, Browse local files shows the folder). It is a short script, so you can open it and read it first. With an AI assistant such as
Claude Code, just ask it to follow
installer/INSTALL.md for you.
Then start Valheim from Steam, load a world and press F7: the manager lists every mod, installed and up to date.
Option 2: by hand (you already use BepInEx, or you want to pick and choose)
- BepInEx: install BepInExPack_Valheim: copy the contents of its
BepInExPack_Valheim folder into your Valheim folder (next to valheim.exe). Start the game once and close it.
- ScriptEngine: from BepInEx.Debug releases download ScriptEngine_*.zip and copy its
BepInEx folder over yours, so you have BepInEx\plugins\ScriptEngine.dll. Create the folder BepInEx\scripts. Then open
BepInEx\config\com.bepis.bepinex.scriptengine.cfg (start the game once if it is not there yet) and set LoadOnStart = true under
[General]; it is off by default, and without it the mods only load after you press F6.
- The mods: from dist/ here download each mod you want, both its.dll and its.pdb, into BepInEx\scripts. Take
ModUpdater.dll and.pdb from the manager's dist/ too, so
you get updates with F7 from then on.
- Start Valheim. In a world, a chat line such as [Mod]: CraftFromChests v1.3.4 loaded shows each mod is running.
Option 3: Linux (native game, standard or Flatpak Steam)
Follow the manager's Linux installation guide.
The installer lives in the manager repo; this repo contains the gameplay mods.
Playing together
Every player installs the mods they want for themselves. A few need more than that:
| Mod | Who needs it |
|---|---|
| AICompanion | Everyone in the world, the host too: without it the game deletes saved companions. |
| Recycler, BountyBoard, SlotMachine, BirdTrap, LedgerChest, Quad's Cigars, SkalTavern, Ziplines, Arena (new build pieces and items; the Arena's host also picks where it stands) | Everyone, and the host above all: a game without the mod deletes the pieces when their area loads. Restart after installing or updating them. |
| PortalHub, BountyBoard | The host (it keeps the portal links and the contracts), and everyone who wants their menus. |
| Everything else | Only the players who want it. |
On a dedicated server, put the host's mods in the server's BepInEx\scripts (with BepInEx and ScriptEngine installed there too).
Updating and removing
- Update: press F7 in game, then Update all. Most mods reload on the spot; mods that add build pieces ask you to restart.
- Remove one mod: delete its.dll and.pdb from BepInEx\scripts (or click Disable in F7).
- Remove everything: delete BepInEx, winhttp.dll, doorstop_config.ini,.doorstop_version and doorstop_libs from the Valheim
folder (Steam's Verify integrity of game files does not remove them). Pieces from mods you remove (a Recycler, a trap) disappear from your world.

Install & use Install: BepInEx plugin
- The archive from playbuff is the mod itself — usually a BepInEx plugin (a .dll or a plugin folder once unzipped).
- Recommended: use a community mod manager (such as r2modman) — pick this game, import the mod, and the manager sets up BepInEx and its dependencies for you.
- Manual route: install the BepInEx loader in the game folder, then drop the unzipped .dll or plugin folder into BepInEx/plugins/.
- Launch the game — the BepInEx console logs every plugin it loads; seeing this mod in the log means it is installed.
Mods with listed dependencies need those installed too, or they will not load. Options are usually changed in-game or in the plugin's config file. In multiplayer, the host and every client need the same mods installed.
Install these first, or the mod will not work:
