📖 About

Horse is a custom creature mod that adds a new rideable animal and a variety of new items to Valheim. You can tame it, ride it, fight and joust from its saddle, have it pull your horse cart, breed it, and store items in its saddlebags.

⚠️ Note: This mod may not be compatible with SkilledCarryWeight.

⚠️ Reminder: Use this mod at your own risk. Always back up your character and world files before installing or updating.

⚒️ Core Features

Horses spawn in the Meadows biome, and only on sunny days — so they are intentionally rare.

Horses may spawn with different coat textures and patterns.

Horses can be equipped with horse armor, granting a bonus to health.

Horses can be commanded to Wait Here with a configurable hotkey.

Horses can jump — press Jump while riding to leap (Use dismounts). Jump force and stamina cost are configurable.

Horses can pull the horse cart. The cart's storage size (rows and columns) is configurable.

Horses can be tamed using Blueberries, Carrots, Cloudberries, and Barley.

Tamed, saddled horses can carry a saddlebag inventory, accessible with a configurable hotkey (default: B). Saddlebag size is fully configurable. Items stored in the saddlebags will drop on the ground if the horse dies. Disabled by default — enable in the config when ready.

Saddled horses show saddlebags on their back (can be turned off with Enable Visuals under [Saddlebags]).

Horse offspring will flee from players — keep the area enclosed when breeding.

Taming and growth times are roughly equivalent to those of the Lox.

All of the above is configurable via the config file, and syncs with server/admin settings.

⚔️ Mounted Combat

Fight from the saddle with swords, axes, maces, clubs, torches, spears, bows and crossbows — every attack has its own seated animation, your legs stay in the stirrups.

Draw and fire bows, throw spears and fire crossbows on horseback. Thrown spears are picked up automatically while riding.

Hold block to raise your shield or weapon while riding.

Your rider turns in the saddle to follow your aim — up to 90° left and right — and your attacks, arrows and spears go where you aim. Melee can reach enemies at your horse's feet.

Riders hold what they carry: weapons and torches at the ready, shields up, bows in hand, free hands on the reins. Capes are hidden while riding (configurable).

Works on other mounts too: the Lox, Moose and Asksvin get mounted combat as well, using the horse's riding animations fitted to each one.

Each mount's seat (leg spread, seat height and position, lean) and extra reach is set in Raelaziel.OdinHorse.MountSeats.yml. Add a block to give any rideable tame mounted combat, including other mods' creatures (an OdinBear example is included). Changes apply instantly and sync from the server.

Weapons without mounted animations (two-handers, knives, atgeirs, pickaxes, staves, fists) still dismount you when you attack. Your own horse can't be hurt by your attacks unless PvP is on.

Turn limits, reach, aim speed and more are configurable in [Mounted Combat]. All players need the mod.

🏇 Jousting Lances

While riding, hold attack to lower the lance and charge. Release to raise it again.

Charge hits scale with your mount's speed — the faster you ride, the harder you hit and the farther you knock enemies back. Too slow and the lance just pushes past.

Keep it lowered to keep hitting: anything still on the lance is hit again every second. Holding it lowered drains stamina, like holding a shield up.

Only creatures and players are hit — riding past your buildings, trees and rocks won't damage them.

PvP: a hard enough hit knocks another rider off their mount (both players need PvP on).

Carry a shield or torch in your off hand while jousting, and block with the lance raised.

On foot, lances stab like a one-handed spear.

Recipes, damage, speed scaling, stamina drain, unhorsing and aim limits are co

Install & use Install: BepInEx plugin

  1. The archive from playbuff is the mod itself — usually a BepInEx plugin (a .dll or a plugin folder once unzipped).
  2. Recommended: use a community mod manager (such as r2modman) — pick this game, import the mod, and the manager sets up BepInEx and its dependencies for you.
  3. Manual route: install the BepInEx loader in the game folder, then drop the unzipped .dll or plugin folder into BepInEx/plugins/.
  4. Launch the game — the BepInEx console logs every plugin it loads; seeing this mod in the log means it is installed.

Mods with listed dependencies need those installed too, or they will not load. Options are usually changed in-game or in the plugin's config file. In multiplayer, the host and every client need the same mods installed.
