Oathbound
Free, work-in-progress Valheim mod by Lion And Otter · Version 0.21.14
Choose from 13 classes, each with a 79-node talent tree, a level-80 cap, and active abilities. Build around shields, heavy weapons, stealth, unarmed combat, elemental spells, blood magic or companions. Class equipment rules can be disabled by the host; Dragonsworn is experimental.
- Keep your progress: switch classes and retain separate levels and talents. Only your active class earns EXP and grants benefits; vanilla skills still progress.
- Defend your home: optional biome sieges add warbands, portal objectives and commanders. Sieges are on by default and can damage structures; they pause when everyone leaves. Blood moons bring tougher nights every seventh night.
- Fight together: Optional shared EXP rewards players who damage a monster, including through companions and burning effects. Sharing is off by default; standing nearby alone does not qualify.

New in 0.21.14
Admin level command: server admins and the host can press F5 and run oathbound_level set 30 PlayerName (or add/remove). Rogue can now equip the grappling hook. Ability effects are half their previous size. The admin command needs 0.21.14 on the server; everything else is client-side and 0.21.x servers remain compatible.
Install
Requires Valheim, BepInExPack Valheim 5.4.2350 and Jotunn 2.30.1. Tested on Valheim 1.0.16. Back up characters and worlds before installing or updating.
- Mod manager: install Oathbound into your Valheim profile; installs the declared dependencies. Launch through that profile.
- Manual standalone: install BepInEx and Jotunn first, then merge the ZIP's BepInEx folder into your game folder. Keep both Oathbound DLLs in BepInEx/plugins/WarriorRpg.
- Windows all-in-one: includes both dependencies. Close Valheim, extract beside valheim.exe, then start through Steam. Linux servers need the appropriate Linux loader.
For multiplayer, install the same Oathbound release and both dependencies on the server and every client. Stop the game/server before updating, replace both mod DLLs, and remove duplicate older installations.
Start playing
Visit the Oathstone outside the starting sacrificial-stone circle to choose a class and spend talent points. Press H for your class ability; Mage and Warlock hold B to select a spell. Hunter and Dragonsworn use H to send their companion at a target, B to call it and J to heal it. Press K to dismiss your wolf, whelp or summoned undead. Rebind these in Settings > Controls > Keyboard & Mouse.
Talent resets preserve your class level. Death removes half the active class's unfinished level EXP, without losing levels or talents; vanilla death consequences still apply.
Choose your settings
Launch once to generate BepInEx/config/local.warrior.rpg.cfg, then close the game/server before editing:
- Keep vanilla raids: under [Sieges], set Enabled = false. This disables Oathbound sieges, not vanilla raids.
- Allow any equipment: under [Equipment], set RestrictionsEnabled = false (default: true). Ability and talent weapon requirements still apply.
- Share monster EXP: under [Progression], set SharedExperience = true.
- Open classes from inventory: under [Classes], set AccessMode = MenuButton.
- Disable blood moons: under [BloodMoon], set Enabled = false.
Restart afterward. In multiplayer, the host/server controls these settings; reconnect clients after changes.
Admin commands: server admins and the host can press F5 and run oathbound_level set|add|remove [player] to change a player's active class level. Leave out the name for yourself. Talents the new level cannot pay for are refunded.
WIP and save compatibility
Balance, Dragonsworn companion behaviour, controller-only menus and compatibility with other mods still need playtesting. Xbox/crossplay is unverified. Scripted two-player EXP checks have passed; broad multiplayer testing remains ongoing.
Install & use Install: BepInEx plugin
- The archive from playbuff is the mod itself — usually a BepInEx plugin (a .dll or a plugin folder once unzipped).
- Recommended: use a community mod manager (such as r2modman) — pick this game, import the mod, and the manager sets up BepInEx and its dependencies for you.
- Manual route: install the BepInEx loader in the game folder, then drop the unzipped .dll or plugin folder into BepInEx/plugins/.
- Launch the game — the BepInEx console logs every plugin it loads; seeing this mod in the log means it is installed.
Mods with listed dependencies need those installed too, or they will not load. Options are usually changed in-game or in the plugin's config file. In multiplayer, the host and every client need the same mods installed.
Install these first, or the mod will not work:
