No Free Maps
Knowledge has its price. No zoom, no pan — only minimap and pain.
No Free Maps restricts full map access to physical world objects only. Press M? Nothing. Click the minimap? Nothing. The only way to see the full map is to find a Vegvisir runestone or use a Cartography Table.
Features
- Map key disabled — pressing M, clicking the minimap, or any other method to open the full map is blocked
- Vegvisir — interacting with any Vegvisir runestone opens the full map at maximum zoom, centered on the discovered boss location
- Cartography Table — reading from or writing to a Cartography Table opens the full map at default zoom
- Fully locked view — while the map is open, zoom and panning are completely disabled. You see what you get
- Minimap unaffected — the corner minimap is always visible and works as usual
- Normal closing — press Esc or M to close the map when it's open
Installation
- Install BepInEx for Valheim
- Place NoFreeMaps.dll into BepInEx/plugins/
- Launch the game
Requirements
- BepInEx 5.x
- No other mods required
- Works in singleplayer and multiplayer (client-side)
How It Works
The plugin patches Valheim's Minimap class to block manual map opening. When a player interacts with a Vegvisir or Cartography Table, the map is temporarily allowed to open. While open, all map input (zoom, pan, drag) is disabled — the view is locked to what you're shown. Closing the map works normally via Esc or M.
Compatibility
This is a client-side mod. It does not modify world data or interfere with vanilla multiplayer. Other players without the mod will have normal map behavior.
Install & use Install: BepInEx plugin
- The archive from playbuff is the mod itself — usually a BepInEx plugin (a .dll or a plugin folder once unzipped).
- Recommended: use a community mod manager (such as r2modman) — pick this game, import the mod, and the manager sets up BepInEx and its dependencies for you.
- Manual route: install the BepInEx loader in the game folder, then drop the unzipped .dll or plugin folder into BepInEx/plugins/.
- Launch the game — the BepInEx console logs every plugin it loads; seeing this mod in the log means it is installed.
Mods with listed dependencies need those installed too, or they will not load. Options are usually changed in-game or in the plugin's config file. In multiplayer, the host and every client need the same mods installed.
Install these first, or the mod will not work:
