About this mod Author’s original text

NH Chaos Shield

A skull-faced round shield, its cracks glowing with raw chaos. From the Nostalgia Heroes / Necroverse Heroes collection.

Features

  • New shield Chaos Shield (prefab NH_ChaosShield) with its own inventory icon.
  • The same skull-and-crack model as the Chaos Buckler, scaled up to the size of the vanilla round Wood Shield and held on the forearm like it.
  • The cracks and eyes glow dark purple with a slow, gentle pulse, and a little purple smoke drifts from the shield face.
  • Crafted at the Forge.
  • Built on the vanilla ShieldWood, so blocking, parrying, durability and upgrades behave like the Wood Shield.
  • Works side by side with NH Chaos Buckler (separate item, separate files).

Recipe (placeholder)

The recipe is a placeholder and may change in a later version.

| Station | Level | Cost | Upgrade cost |

|---|---|---|---|

| Forge | 1 | Bronze 10, Wood 10, LeatherScraps 4 | Bronze 5, Wood 5, LeatherScraps 2 per level (half the craft cost) |

As in vanilla, the upgrade cost is multiplied by the level gained and each higher quality needs one more Forge level.

Server admins can change the recipe in BepInEx/config/com.nostalgiaheroes.chaosshield.cfg, section [Recipe] (CraftingStation, MinStationLevel, Requirements as Item:Amount:AmountPerLevel,...). These settings are admin-only and synced from the server to all players by Jotunn.

Stats (placeholder)

The stats are placeholders: they are the same as the vanilla Wood Shield (block armor 6, +6 per level; block force 20, +5 per level; parry bonus 1.5x; durability 200, +50 per level; weight 4; max quality 3; movement speed -5%; Blocks skill). Final balancing may change them. The Wood Shield's paint styles are turned off because they cannot show on this model.

Glow and smoke settings (per player)

Section [Glow and aura] in the same config file. These are client-side only, so each player can turn them down:

| Key | Default | Meaning |

|---|---|---|

| GlowEnabled | true | Glowing cracks on or off |

| GlowIntensity | 1.5 | Crack glow brightness (0 to 4; above about 1.6 the colour turns pinker) |

| LightIntensity | 0.6 | Small dim purple light in front of the shield (0 = off) |

| GlowRange | 1.5 | Range of that light in metres |

| SmokeEnabled | true | Smoke on or off |

| SmokeAmount | 1.0 | Smoke amount (1 = about 5 puffs per second, 0 = none) |

| SmokeSize | 1.0 | Smoke puff size |

Performance note

The shield model is very detailed (about 835,000 triangles). On slower PCs, many copies on screen at once (for example several dropped shields, or item stands) may lower the frame rate. Turn the smoke or the light off if needed.

Installation

Use a mod manager (r2modman Mod Manager). For a manual install, copy the whole package into BepInEx/plugins/NecroverseHeroes-NH_ChaosShield, keeping the plugins/NH_ChaosShield folder with the DLL and the nh_chaosshield bundle.

Requires BepInExPack_Valheim 5.4.2351 and Jotunn 2.30.2.

Multiplayer

Every player and the server should have the same version installed. The item name NH_ChaosShield stays the same in future versions, so saved shields keep working.

Testing

With devcommands enabled: spawn NH_ChaosShield.

Install & use Install: BepInEx plugin

  1. The archive from playbuff is the mod itself — usually a BepInEx plugin (a .dll or a plugin folder once unzipped).
  2. Recommended: use a community mod manager (such as r2modman) — pick this game, import the mod, and the manager sets up BepInEx and its dependencies for you.
  3. Manual route: install the BepInEx loader in the game folder, then drop the unzipped .dll or plugin folder into BepInEx/plugins/.
  4. Launch the game — the BepInEx console logs every plugin it loads; seeing this mod in the log means it is installed.

Mods with listed dependencies need those installed too, or they will not load. Options are usually changed in-game or in the plugin's config file. In multiplayer, the host and every client need the same mods installed.
