Hungry Viking
Visual warnings for hunger, smoke, and poison — screen vignettes and on-screen labels that escalate in urgency so you never miss a critical status.

Hungry Viking
Your character knows they're hungry. You should too.
This mod was inspired by a humiliating and infuriating death that ended a zero-death solo run. I was in my base cooking when all of a sudden - YOU DIED! Why did I die? All my food buffs had expired and I didn't notice, and I was getting smoked by the campfire as I cooked. And this is to say nothing of many of us who have needlessly died because of entering battle with a critical food buff missing.
Some will say I should have noticed and it's on me - fair enough - but I say it's not realisic that you can be starving and not notice it. Hence the design of this mod - it doesn't eat for you automatically - it just makes sure you notice when you're hungry.
What This Mod Does
Adds escalating visual warnings when your food buffs approach expiry, and overlays for smoke, poison and cold. It does not eat for you. It does not automate anything. It respects your agency completely — it just makes sure you know what your character knows.
Hunger
- Screen vignette — an amber glow creeps in from the screen edges as your hungriest food slot ticks down. Intensity and extent are configurable. The vignette oscillates to draw your eye: slow pulse at first, faster as urgency increases.
- On-screen label — "You are starting to feel hungry." → "You are getting hungry." → "You are hungry." The text color shifts from orange toward red as urgency rises.
- HUD status icon — a Hungry icon appears in the same row as Rested and Shelter, so you can spot hunger state at a glance without reading the label.
- Dismiss key — press H (configurable) to acknowledge the warning and clear the vignette and label so you can see the screen clearly during a fight or a careful build. The HUD status icon stays put as a quiet reminder, and the full warning returns on its own if your hunger gets worse — or resets once you eat.
All hunger effects are off when you have 3 full food slots. Warnings begin when your hungriest slot crosses the configurable threshold (default 90 seconds remaining).
Warnings only track food you've actually eaten this session: a fresh character who has never eaten sees nothing, and empty slots only count as hunger once a previously filled slot runs out (or is about to).
Smoke
- Center vignette — a light grey haze appears from the center of the screen outward when you are standing in smoke. Fades in over 1 second and fades out over 2 seconds.
- On-screen label — "You can't breathe in the smoke!" The text oscillates from grey toward red.
- No extra HUD icon — the game already shows one.
Poison
- Center vignette — a green haze appears from the center of the screen outward when you are poisoned. Same fade behavior as smoke.
- On-screen label — "You are poisoned." The text oscillates from green toward red.
- No extra HUD icon — the game already shows one.
Freezing
- Center vignette — a blue haze appears from the center of the screen outward when you are cold, and deepens when you are freezing. Same fade behavior as smoke.
- On-screen label — "You are freezing!" once Freezing sets in, oscillating from blue toward red.
- Freezing is the one that kills. Cold does no damage at all, so the Cold warning is off by default; turn on Warn When Cold if you want the earlier heads-up, and it stays deliberately quiet — Cold Warning Strength scales it to a fraction of the Freezing warning.
- No extra HUD icon — the game already shows one.
Warning labels
The hunger, smoke and poison labels stack at the top center of the screen. By default they move down out of the way of anything else up there, such as a compass mod or the boss health bar, and move back up a few seconds after it goes away. Set Placement to Manual to pin them at a fixed height instead.
Configuration
Open BepInEx/config/DeathMonger.HungryViking.cfg to adjust settings. Changing Vignette Intensity or Vignette Extent in any section, or either label setting, triggers a 2-second preview so you can dial in the values without needing to b
Install & use Install: BepInEx plugin
- The archive from playbuff is the mod itself — usually a BepInEx plugin (a .dll or a plugin folder once unzipped).
- Recommended: use a community mod manager (such as r2modman) — pick this game, import the mod, and the manager sets up BepInEx and its dependencies for you.
- Manual route: install the BepInEx loader in the game folder, then drop the unzipped .dll or plugin folder into BepInEx/plugins/.
- Launch the game — the BepInEx console logs every plugin it loads; seeing this mod in the log means it is installed.
Mods with listed dependencies need those installed too, or they will not load. Options are usually changed in-game or in the plugin's config file. In multiplayer, the host and every client need the same mods installed.
Install these first, or the mod will not work:
