About this mod Author’s original text
HearthCodex
Learn the creatures of Valheim instead of reading a completed wiki on day one.
By BlackHearthx. Open the book with F7 by default.
Observe a creature to discover its identity. Defeat it with credited kill participation to complete its entry.
HearthCodex adds a progressive in-game bestiary. Unknown creatures stay hidden as???; discovery reveals their name and portrait, while study unlocks the useful details: health, resistances, weak spots, drops, habitats, variants, and weapon suggestions based on recipes your character knows.
What you get
| Feature | What it means in play |
| --- | --- |
| Progressive discovery | Observe ordinary creatures and use Vegvisires to discover bosses. |
| Study through combat | A credited kill completes the creature's entry. |
| Useful combat notes | Base health, resistances, immunities, weak spots, and drops. |
| Suggested weapons | Known recipes ranked against the selected creature, with varied weapon styles. |
| Biome browsing | Filter the catalogue by biome or by unknown, discovered, and studied state. |
| Boss collection | Browse every boss in a dedicated category above the biome list. |
| Creature portraits | Trophy art first, with a safe rendered fallback when no useful trophy exists. |
| Per-character progress | Every character keeps a separate journal. |
| Localization | English, Brazilian Portuguese, and European Portuguese. |
Weapon suggestions compare expected quality-one primary-hit damage at the character's current weapon skill after target resistances. They show relevant resource, full-draw, and reload costs and vary weapon families when possible. Weaknesses explain why damage changes but do not hide a stronger neutral option. This remains guidance rather than a complete DPS simulator: animation speed, combos, weak spots, projectile spread, damage-over-time stacking, and special effects can change the practical result.
Your first session
- Press F7 to open HearthCodex.
- Approach a creature and keep it clearly in view to discover it.
- Defeat the creature and receive Valheim's kill credit to complete the entry.
- Open the book again and browse its combat notes, drops, and suggested weapons.
Installation
Install with a -compatible mod manager. BepInEx and Jötunn are installed automatically.
For manual installation, install BepInEx and Jötunn first, then place HearthCodex.dll in a folder under BepInEx/plugins.
Configuration
After first launch, settings are written to BepInEx/config/com.blackhearthx.hearthcodex.cfg. You can change the open key, observation distance and duration, interface scale and position, visible sections, optional numeric multipliers, and diagnostic logging.
Compatibility
The catalogue is built from creatures, recipes, spawn lists, locations, and dungeon rooms available in the running game. Compatible modded creatures and weapons can be included automatically. Bad or incomplete sources are skipped without stopping the remaining catalogue.
HearthCodex is client-side and does not enforce installation on the server. Multiplayer study progress follows the kill credit sent by Valheim to participating players.
Existing characters automatically recover per-creature kills already recorded by Valheim. Those creatures become studied without another fight; HearthCodex keeps the greater count when both records exist.
Português do Brasil
O HearthCodex adiciona um bestiário progressivo ao Valheim. A tecla padrão é F7.

Install & use Install: BepInEx plugin
- The archive from playbuff is the mod itself — usually a BepInEx plugin (a .dll or a plugin folder once unzipped).
- Recommended: use a community mod manager (such as r2modman) — pick this game, import the mod, and the manager sets up BepInEx and its dependencies for you.
- Manual route: install the BepInEx loader in the game folder, then drop the unzipped .dll or plugin folder into BepInEx/plugins/.
- Launch the game — the BepInEx console logs every plugin it loads; seeing this mod in the log means it is installed.
Mods with listed dependencies need those installed too, or they will not load. Options are usually changed in-game or in the plugin's config file. In multiplayer, the host and every client need the same mods installed.
Install these first, or the mod will not work:
