FortifySkillsReborn
FortifySkillsReborn is a fork of FortifySkillsRedux by Searica (itself a remake of the original FortifySkills mod), updated for Valheim 1.0 and maintained by dethkube. It changes how skills are lost on death. Each skill gains a second, slowly-growing fortified level, and your skills can never fall below it. The longer you stay alive the higher that floor rises, so repeated deaths no longer undo your progress.
By default you still take the game's normal death penalty, but cannot drop below your fortified level. For the harsher behaviour of the older FortifySkillsRedux, where dying drops each skill to its fortified level, set Skill Loss Mode to ResetToFortify (see Configuration).
Server-Side Info: This mod does work as a client-side only mod and only needs to be installed on the server if you wish to enforce configuration settings.
Supported Game Version
Updated for Valheim 1.0 (built and verified against 1.0.12, Deep North). Requires Jotunn 2.30.0 or newer.
Skills added by the game since the previous release (Polearms, Crossbows, Dodge and Ride) get their own configuration sections automatically.
Renamed from FortifySkillsRedux
This mod was renamed from FortifySkillsRedux to FortifySkillsReborn, which changes the plugin GUID and therefore the config file name:
- Old: BepInEx/config/Searica.Valheim.FortifySkillsRedux.cfg
- New: BepInEx/config/dethkube.Valheim.FortifySkillsReborn.cfg
If you are coming from FortifySkillsRedux, uninstall it first. Running both at once means both patch the same methods, so your XP rates get applied twice. Your existing settings are not carried over automatically; copy them into the new file if you want to keep them.
Two things behave differently in this fork (see Mechanics):
- Death now applies the normal game penalty with the fortified level as a floor, instead of resetting each skill straight to its fortified level.
- The default XP values have changed (Active Skill XP Multiplier 1.5 to 1.0, Max Fortify Skill XP Rate 0.8 to 0.5).
To get the old behaviour back, see Matching the old FortifySkillsRedux behaviour. It takes three settings.

Mechanics
Every skill has a second level tracked alongside it, called the fortified level. It rises as you earn skill XP, very slowly at first and faster while your active level sits well above it. The longer you stay alive, the more of your progress becomes permanent. Your fortified level is shown in parentheses next to your active level in the skill list.
Skill Loss Mode controls what happens to that progress when you die.
FortifyFloor (default)
You take the game's normal death penalty (5% by default, scaled by your world modifiers), and the fortified level acts purely as a floor.
| Scenario | Active | Fortified | After dying |
|---|---|---|---|
| Normal death | 20 | 16 | 19 (lost 5%, still above the floor) |
| Repeated deaths | 17 | 16 | 16 (cannot fall below the floor) |
| Soft death (dying again shortly after a death) | 20 | 16 | 20 (no penalty, same as the base game) |
A death costs you the same as it does in the base game. The fortified level only limits how far you can fall.
ResetToFortify
Dying sets each skill straight to its fortified level, discarding whatever the normal penalty would have been.
| Scenario | Active | Fortified | After dying |
|---|---|---|---|
| Any hard death | 20 | 16 | 16 (the whole gap is lost) |
This is how FortifySkillsRedux behaved. Your fortified level can fall a long way behind your active level during a long survival streak, so a single death can cost far more than the vanilla 5%, such as the 20% in the table above. Redux offset t
Install & use Install: BepInEx plugin
- The archive from playbuff is the mod itself — usually a BepInEx plugin (a .dll or a plugin folder once unzipped).
- Recommended: use a community mod manager (such as r2modman) — pick this game, import the mod, and the manager sets up BepInEx and its dependencies for you.
- Manual route: install the BepInEx loader in the game folder, then drop the unzipped .dll or plugin folder into BepInEx/plugins/.
- Launch the game — the BepInEx console logs every plugin it loads; seeing this mod in the log means it is installed.
Mods with listed dependencies need those installed too, or they will not load. Options are usually changed in-game or in the plugin's config file. In multiplayer, the host and every client need the same mods installed.
Install these first, or the mod will not work:
