DiscoveryJournal
By Dedryx · Version 0.2.1
A journal for everything your character has learned how to craft or build.
Learned something new but missed the popup? Open your journal to find the recipe, see its materials, and check where to craft or build it.
Features
- Shows only recipes and build pieces your character knows.
- Displays localized names, icons, material requirements, crafting stations and levels, and build tools/categories.
- Displays the localized in-game description supplied for each item or build piece.
- Adds an Inspect action to craftable items using Valheim's live quality-one tooltip stats and item icon, without creating an item.
- Tracks new entries with a yellow NEW badge and a count on the New tab.
- Includes New, All, Crafting, and Building filters and title-only search.
- Adds compact biome, required-material, crafting-location, and category filters populated only from known entries.
- Lets players toggle nearby-storage discovery from the journal and review nearby-only or whole-biome recipe resets before confirming.
- Keeps a selected new entry visible until you select another entry, change search/filter, or close the journal.
- Provides Mark All Read for all currently known entries.
- Uses vanilla-styled panels, mouse-wheel scrolling, and a small pool of reusable rows for large journals.
- Baselines existing characters without hundreds of false new-entry notifications.
Using the journal
Open inventory with Tab and click Journal on the crafting panel, below the repair hammer. Use Back to Inventory to return. The underlying inventory panels fade while the journal is open.
Press J by default to open directly to the journal. The shortcut is configurable. Movement and jumping are blocked while typing in journal text fields.
Search matches recipe and build-piece titles, with a short delay after typing. It does not search materials or reveal unknown recipes. The Filters panel combines biome, required material, crafting/build location, and item/build category; every choice comes from entries the character already knows. Valheim does not label recipes by biome, so the biome filter derives one progression tier from the earliest source of each material and the latest requirement needed to unlock the recipe. Requirements show base amounts; ordinary upgrade costs and crafting bonuses are not simulated. Special enhancement requirements appear separately after the character discovers the corresponding station.
After a character loads, BepInEx/config/DiscoveryJournal/RecipeBiomeReport.tsv lists every loaded recipe/build piece and its inferred biome. Copy an entry ID into RecipeBiomeOverrides.tsv to assign a reviewed biome explicitly. This supports vanilla corrections and modded content without replacing the generated report.
The journal expands vertically when the current UI layout has room. Short recipe details hide their scrollbar, while longer lists and descriptions retain wheel, drag, and scrollbar navigation.
Optional: learn from nearby storage
Disabled by default. Enable this if you want materials brought home by friends to count as discoveries for your character without having to pick them up yourself.
The mod checks loaded, accessible player-built containers within the configured radius every seven seconds. World-generated loot chests and inaccessible storage do not qualify. Items are never moved or consumed. Vanilla still decides which recipes and build pieces become known, including its station and build-tool requirements.
Discoveries produce one vanilla-style notification per batch. Other players do not receive your discoveries or journal state.
Use Nearby Discovery: OFF/ON in the journal to change the setting. Enabling it waits for a full scan interval before learning anything. Reset Recipes opens a review window and does not delete anything immediately. Delete Nearby resets tracked nearby-storage discoveries for a selected biome while preserving materials later acquired normally. Delete Whol
Install & use Install: BepInEx plugin
- The archive from playbuff is the mod itself — usually a BepInEx plugin (a .dll or a plugin folder once unzipped).
- Recommended: use a community mod manager (such as r2modman) — pick this game, import the mod, and the manager sets up BepInEx and its dependencies for you.
- Manual route: install the BepInEx loader in the game folder, then drop the unzipped .dll or plugin folder into BepInEx/plugins/.
- Launch the game — the BepInEx console logs every plugin it loads; seeing this mod in the log means it is installed.
Mods with listed dependencies need those installed too, or they will not load. Options are usually changed in-game or in the plugin's config file. In multiplayer, the host and every client need the same mods installed.
Install these first, or the mod will not work:
