About this mod Author’s original text

Decorative Pet

Decorative Pet adds lightweight, multiplayer-friendly companion animals to Valheim. Spawn a named vanilla creature, make it passive and invulnerable, and let it follow you around as a purely decorative companion.

The mod uses Valheim's existing creature prefabs. No custom models, textures, or asset bundles are required.

Features

  • Spawn a named vanilla creature near the player who issued the command.
  • Pets are immortal and use Valheim's native movement and attack animations.
  • Toggle Ignore enemies by aiming at your pet and interacting with an empty hand.
  • Feed the pet with its normal accepted food; the hover text shows a hunger bar.
  • Follow and stay modes.
  • Rename your own pets at any time.
  • Automatic teleport when a pet gets too far away.
  • Works in multiplayer: the host creates the networked pet, and every player can see it.
  • Each player can control only their own pets.
  • Pets exist for the current hosted world session and can be spawned again after a restart.

Installation

Install DecorativePet through Mod Manager and launch Valheim with Start modded.

For multiplayer, install the same version for the host and all players. The host must have the mod because the host creates and moves the networked pets. Installing it for everyone ensures that names, passive behavior, commands, and follow/stay mode work consistently.

Chat commands

Press Enter to open the Valheim chat and enter one of these commands:

/pet help

/pet spawn [Prefab] [Name]

/pet name

/pet follow

/pet stay

/pet ignore

/pet attack

/pet list

/pet remove

Examples:

/pet spawn Wolf Rex

/pet spawn Lox Big Bublik

/pet name My Companion

/pet stay

/pet follow

/pet ignore

/pet attack

If no prefab or name is supplied, the configured defaults are used:

/pet spawn

The same command can also be entered in the F5 console without the leading.

Available creature prefabs

| Prefab | Creature | Notes |

|---|---|---|

| Wolf | Wolf | Recommended default |

| Boar | Boar | |

| Lox | Lox | |

| Chicken | Chicken | |

| Deer | Deer | |

| Hare | Hare | |

| Neck | Neck | |

| Serpent | Serpent | Best spawned in water |

| Fish1 | Fish | Water only |

| Fish2 | Fish | Water only |

| Fish3 | Fish | Water only |

| Fish4 | Fish | Water only |

Prefab names are case-sensitive. If a prefab is unavailable in your Valheim version, the command will return an error.

For full native follow animation and naming, use tameable creatures such as Wolf, Boar, or Lox. Creatures without Valheim's MonsterAI or Tameable components may spawn but cannot support every companion feature.

Multiplayer behavior

  • A player enters a /pet command in chat.
  • The request is sent to the world host through Valheim's normal network chat RPC.
  • The host creates a networked vanilla creature near the requesting player.
  • All connected players can see the pet, its name, and its movement.

Pet commands affect only the pets owned by the player who entered the command. For example, /pet remove removes your pets, not somebody else's.

Aim at your pet to see its assigned name, hunger bar, and the current aggression action.

With an empty hand, interact to toggle Ignore enemies. With food in hand, the normal

Valheim feeding interaction is preserved. The chat commands /pet ignore and /pet attack

set the mode directly.

Following and teleporting

Pets follow their owner while follow mode is enabled. If the distance becomes greater than 15 metres, the server automatically teleports the pet close to its owner.

The teleport distance can be changed in:

BepInEx/config/ua.bohdan.decorativepet.cfg

Edit the TeleportDistance value and restart the game or reload the profile.

Removing a pet

Use this command in chat:

/pet remove

This removes all decorative pets owned by the player who entered the command. It is recommended to remove your pets before uninstalling the mod.

Decorative pets are session-based and disappear when the host ends or restarts the world session.

Install & use Install: BepInEx plugin

  1. The archive from playbuff is the mod itself — usually a BepInEx plugin (a .dll or a plugin folder once unzipped).
  2. Recommended: use a community mod manager (such as r2modman) — pick this game, import the mod, and the manager sets up BepInEx and its dependencies for you.
  3. Manual route: install the BepInEx loader in the game folder, then drop the unzipped .dll or plugin folder into BepInEx/plugins/.
  4. Launch the game — the BepInEx console logs every plugin it loads; seeing this mod in the log means it is installed.

Mods with listed dependencies need those installed too, or they will not load. Options are usually changed in-game or in the plugin's config file. In multiplayer, the host and every client need the same mods installed.
