Features
🏹 Crossbow Enhancements
- Configurable Reload Time: Adjust crossbow reload speed (1-10 seconds, default 4)
- Reload While Running: Removes movement restrictions, allowing reloading while running, jumping, or performing other actions
- Stamina Management: Option to disable stamina drain during reload
🧠 Smart Reload System
- Movement Freedom: When enabled, crossbows can reload while running
- Stamina Control: Toggle stamina consumption during reload on/off
- Immediate Application: Changes apply instantly to all crossbows
Installation
Install with your mod manager, or drop BetterCrossbows.dll into BepInEx/plugins.
Configuration
ServerSync Settings
- Lock Configuration: When enabled, only server admins can change settings
Crossbow Settings
- Crossbow Enabled: Main functionality toggle
- Crossbow Loading Time: Reload duration in seconds (1-10, less = faster)
- Reload While Running: Remove movement restrictions to allow reloading while running/jumping
- Reload Stamina Drain: Toggle stamina consumption during reload
Recommended Mods
Pair BetterCrossbows with SaveCrossbowState by Azumatt for a better crossbow experience. SaveCrossbowState saves crossbow loaded state when switching weapons, preventing unnecessary reloads.
Compatibility
- Built against Valheim 1.0 (build 25185596).
- Requires BepInExPack Valheim 5.4.2350 or newer.
- Install on both the client and the server. Settings are synchronized with ServerSync, and the
server's values take precedence while Lock Configuration is enabled.

Install & use Install: BepInEx plugin
- The archive from playbuff is the mod itself — usually a BepInEx plugin (a .dll or a plugin folder once unzipped).
- Recommended: use a community mod manager (such as r2modman) — pick this game, import the mod, and the manager sets up BepInEx and its dependencies for you.
- Manual route: install the BepInEx loader in the game folder, then drop the unzipped .dll or plugin folder into BepInEx/plugins/.
- Launch the game — the BepInEx console logs every plugin it loads; seeing this mod in the log means it is installed.
Mods with listed dependencies need those installed too, or they will not load. Options are usually changed in-game or in the plugin's config file. In multiplayer, the host and every client need the same mods installed.
