Shields can be used in combat to block incoming attacks, arrows and additional resistance to critical hits. Geralt only uses his shield to block from the front, so you can hit with arrows from behind. There are shields for every faction in the game, from the Skellige Shield to the Ofieris Shield and the Toussaint Shield. After attaching the shield, press the use item button, take the shield out and remove it.
There is an in-game menu for feature customization under the options menu, but you may need to re-equip the shield to apply the effect. To use your shield while riding and climbing, download the Better Torches mod.
