About this mod Machine translation

This mod removes certain profanities/curses from the English voiceover and subtitles in the game, replacing them with ***

I'm mainly making this mod for myself, but I thought I'd put it here in case anyone else finds it useful.

Update 2.1 is out now, and it adds filtering for speech and subtitles.

I ultimately plan to make two versions of this mod: Light and Heavy.

Light (currently available) filters out two words (fu** and sh**) and their variations. The mod contains two files: the edited/repacked en.w3strings file for the subtitles, and the edited/repacked enpc.w3speech file. The w3speech file contains all 785 edited sound files. Summary of deleted words:

Fu** and its variants: 591

Sh** and its variants: 381

Heavy (probably for quite some time) filters out the Light word as well as various other words including d*mn, *, c*nt, etc. Once the file is complete, the full list will appear here.

Known bugs:

I've found that most, if not all, instances of editing speech files break lip sync with the characters. So for the person who says that particular line, their mouth doesn't move to that part of the conversation. All other unedited lines work fine. The final impact was about 785 audio files out of 63,800, or 1% of the dialogue.

I honestly don't know how to fix it as I've had no luck with the lipsync process for rmemr's mod (link below). When I repackaged the w3speech files, I included the unedited .cr2w lipsync files along with the edited audio, thinking that this would still make the lips the same even though the audio was edited, but it doesn't seem to do that. I don't know how to fix this, so if you try this and it's really a breaking issue for you, roll back the mod to a subtitles-only version or delete the mod entirely. Or if you know your stuff, feel free to unzip the voice file and see if you can figure out what I couldn't! To try and keep the conversation text the same length on the screen, I replaced each letter with *, so if the word was fuh er, it would appear as ******.

Install & use Install: follow the bundled instructions

  1. Unzip the archive from playbuff and read the bundled readme / instructions first.
  2. There is no universal mod manager for this game: some mods replace game files directly, some go into a game-specific Mods folder, and some need a game-specific community loader or tool first — follow the bundled readme.
  3. Place the files exactly as the readme says; mods with listed dependencies need those installed too.
  4. Launch the game to confirm it loaded; some games require enabling mods in settings or an in-game mod menu.

Install locations vary a lot between games and mods — the bundled readme is the most reliable guide.
