Stardew Open World

🎮 **Welcome to the open world mod for Stardew Valley! ** After years of development, this module has finally completed its core functions and is now presented to everyone for testing experience in its huge scale.

🌍 Module introduction

This mod adds a very, very large playing area to the game. The default size is 100 million tiles (10,000×10,000), but I also did basic testing at 100,000×100,000.

To access the open world, you need to unlock the quarry and enter the open world through the back of the quarry cave. More convenient entrances may be added in the future.

You can also enter `debug warp StardewOpenWorld 5000 9998` in the command console window to send it directly.

✨ Main functions

The open world currently contains the following content:

  • 🌲 Mixed forest
  • ⛰️ Rock, mineral and gemstone outcrops
  • 🌊 lake
  • 🌿 grass
  • 🍓 Berry Bush
  • 🌱 Collectable crops
  • 🎁 Treasure Chest (requires this mod)
  • 👹 Monster

As you travel north, everything levels up to some degree (stronger monsters, better treasures, higher quality ores, etc.).

By default, the map remains unchanged each time you visit within the same archive. You can set it to change randomly every day in the configuration.

When you open the map page in the open world, a rough map of the nearby area is displayed.

⚙️ Custom functions

Other mods can add maps to open world coordinates.

Mods can also add or change monster spawning.

There is a huge configuration file, and although it's a bit confusing, basically the mod is highly configurable.

⚠️ Known issues

  • Taking screenshots of open world maps will cause the game to crash
  • Lake and outcrop generation is still a bit boxy and may need to find a way to make more rounded shapes
  • Tree selection may be less than ideal, but you may not notice it right away
  • Leveling up while traveling north may need some adjustments
  • The map is flat, no mountains or hills yet (lakes are hard enough)
  • Objects, trees, monsters, etc. will regenerate when you move far enough away and return; the mod currently does not remember trees you cut down, monsters you killed, etc. It's a bit like a mine in that respect.
  • Building and leaving items behind in the open world can be problematic, I haven't tested it yet but will try to keep items you place manually
  • Viewing the map takes some time as it tries to squeeze a lot of information into a very small space
  • Most likely there are still a lot of bugs that need to be fixed, but in theory most of them should only show up when you're actually in the open world

🔧 Technical details

The size of the open world breaks a lot of how the original game worked, so a lot of adjustments had to be made to support such a large location. The actual map is only 1 tile in size; actual tile and object information is stored in 100×100 chunks and is not loaded until needed. Objects and monsters are loaded and unloaded as you move from one chunk to another.

Caching, building, and loading are done dynamically to a certain extent; mods try to spread out caching, building, and loading activities to reduce lag. It seems pretty smooth so far, but more testing is definitely needed.

Adding a map to an open world is very easy using the Content Patcher, but may also require more testing.

Adding monster spawns can be done by locating `aedenthorn.StardewOpenWorld/monsters`. You can also edit the `monsters.json` file generated in the mod folder on startup. The format is the same in both ways.

**Code repository:**

Install & use Install: SMAPI mod (Stardew Valley standard)

  1. Install SMAPI first (Stardew Valley's mod loader): download it from smapi.io, run 'install on Windows.bat' and pick your game folder.
  2. Unzip the archive from playbuff and find the folder that contains manifest.json — that folder is the mod.
  3. Copy that whole folder into Stardew Valley/Mods/.
  4. Launch the game through SMAPI (run StardewModdingAPI.exe or set it as the launch option). The console before the title screen lists each mod's load result.

Cheat-style tools may not need SMAPI — unzip and run them as the readme describes. Back up your save before editing it; SMAPI lists failed mods in its console.
