The character portrait replacement tool allows you to freely replace character portraits as long as you prepare suitable pictures in advance.
You can use this mod to replace the portraits of characters in the game at will. The higher the resolution, the easier it is to replace the picture.
When talking to an NPC, click the P key to replace it.
This mod does not contain any portrait images.
Create a new folder under the path "Mods/Portraiture/Portraits" and name it, such as "DCBurger Hi-Res"
Then put the portrait image in (take abigail as an example, the correct operation is "/Mods/Portraiture/Portraits/DCBurger Hi-Res/Abigail.png")
Install & use Install: SMAPI mod (Stardew Valley standard)
- Install SMAPI first (Stardew Valley's mod loader): download it from smapi.io, run 'install on Windows.bat' and pick your game folder.
- Unzip the archive from playbuff and find the folder that contains manifest.json — that folder is the mod.
- Copy that whole folder into Stardew Valley/Mods/.
- Launch the game through SMAPI (run StardewModdingAPI.exe or set it as the launch option). The console before the title screen lists each mod's load result.
Cheat-style tools may not need SMAPI — unzip and run them as the readme describes. Back up your save before editing it; SMAPI lists failed mods in its console.
