Papayahunter Portrait Mod
🎨 **Bachelors and Single Ladies Special Edition**
A year ago I first picked up a digital pen and started working on this mod. After a year of trying and refining, now part one is finally ready for public release!
✨ Creative Concept
I love everything about Stardew Valley and ConcernedApe's original style, but I just can't stand Sebastian's bangs covering his eyes - someone needs to fix his hair!
When drawing these characters, I referenced older iconography from their history (so Maru kept the brown hair) and added my own stylistic tweaks (like Elliot's costume). The hope is that the portraits will feel both familiar and more vivid.
🛠️ Prerequisites
- SMAPI
- Portraiture
- Content Patcher
📥 Installation Guide
**How to install the portrait mod using Portraiture:**
- Download and install Portraiture for your version of SDV
- After proper installation, the manifest.json file should be located at "/Mods/Portraiture/manifest.json"
- Download the portrait module you want to use
- Create a folder in "Mods/Portraiture/Portraits", name it whatever you want (e.g. "Papaya") and extract the portrait files into it
- Once installed correctly, Abigail's file path should be "/Mods/Portraiture/Portraits/Papaya/Abigail.png"
- Launch the game and talk to someone. When the dialog box opens, press the P key to switch portraits until you see the correct portrait. The folder name ("Papaya" in this example) is briefly displayed in the upper left corner of the dialog box. The folder you select will be saved and will remain unchanged across reloads until you change it again
🔄 Latest update
🌟 **MINOR UPDATE**:
- Added up to 2 facial expressions for each character
- Adjusted the portrait to look better
- Fixed the problem of white background appearing on some characters
💕 **Special Note**: Harvey now has all of his expressions. I originally made this mod for myself and I'm married to him...so...that's why.
🎯 Future plans
**coming soon:**
- Add more facial expressions and alternative versions to existing portraits
- Portraits of other villagers! ! This is going to be a huge undertaking, so if I suddenly disappear for a few months... that's what I'm doing
- Future tweaks and corrections to the portrait - I can't leave my art alone
**The further future:**
- Winter clothing hehe. To be honest, I don’t think I can top ConcernedApe’s collection of winter clothing. Haley and Sam's winter outfits are so awesome. But anyway, it's still on the agenda
- Portraits of SVE and RSV. There are a lot of things that are higher priority than this so not sure when it will actually be finished but please know that I would love to make
---
🙏 **Special thanks**:
Thanks to the Stardew Valley Wiki, Pathoschild, Platonymous and SDV Discord community. I simply could not have completed this project without the Portraiture module, and without the resources provided by these four, I would have been lost. Also thanks to CA because I love this game!
Install & use Install: SMAPI mod (Stardew Valley standard)
- Install SMAPI first (Stardew Valley's mod loader): download it from smapi.io, run 'install on Windows.bat' and pick your game folder.
- Unzip the archive from playbuff and find the folder that contains manifest.json — that folder is the mod.
- Copy that whole folder into Stardew Valley/Mods/.
- Launch the game through SMAPI (run StardewModdingAPI.exe or set it as the launch option). The console before the title screen lists each mod's load result.
Cheat-style tools may not need SMAPI — unzip and run them as the readme describes. Back up your save before editing it; SMAPI lists failed mods in its console.
