Custom Fixed Dialogue
🎮 **Make NPC conversations more personalized! **
✨ Mod origin
After downloading the Mister Ginger mod, I discovered that the game forces all adult NPCs to use the same trashcan digging dialogue because this part is hard-coded. This mod was created to solve this problem!
---
🎯 Core Functions
**Removes hard-coded restrictions**, allowing you to create exclusive versions of dialogue for specific NPCs. When an NPC speaks, the game will display a customized version of the text you set in the content pack, rather than the generic default text.
📝 How to use
To create a content patch for use with this mod, you need to know the key (tag) for the string you want to modify.
**Key value prefix rules:**
- String key values from **Characters.json**: add **"Characters_"** prefix
- String keys from **ExtraDialogue.json**: add **"ExtraDialogue_"** prefix
- String keys from **Strings\StringsFromCSFiles.json**: use the exact keys directly from the file
🔧 Configuration example
Use Content Patcher to create custom versions of specific NPCs, just like you would with normal dialogue strings:
```json
{
"Changes": [
{
"Action": "EditData",
"Target": "Characters/Dialogue/MisterGinger",
"Entries": {
"ExtraDialogue_Town_DumpsterDiveComment_Adult": "Mr. Ginger thinks you should stop rooting around in HIS trash bins.$s"
}
}
]
}
```
⚠️ Notes
- If text is used for an NPC without a custom version, automatically falls back to using the default universal string
- The mod expects these strings to be used only for NPC dialogue, so will replace the text with identifier tags
- If you use strings outside of character dialogue, you may accidentally see labels instead of text

Install & use Install: SMAPI mod (Stardew Valley standard)
- Install SMAPI first (Stardew Valley's mod loader): download it from smapi.io, run 'install on Windows.bat' and pick your game folder.
- Unzip the archive from playbuff and find the folder that contains manifest.json — that folder is the mod.
- Copy that whole folder into Stardew Valley/Mods/.
- Launch the game through SMAPI (run StardewModdingAPI.exe or set it as the launch option). The console before the title screen lists each mod's load result.
Cheat-style tools may not need SMAPI — unzip and run them as the readme describes. Back up your save before editing it; SMAPI lists failed mods in its console.
